Hi,

I'm a rising high school senior and I spend a good deal of my free time acting for a local theater. I do not, however, want to study acting in college--I'm planning to go into film. But I do not want to give it up entirely - I'd still like to act on the side in college. A lot of the colleges I'm considering applying to also have strong drama programs (NYU, USC, Northwestern, etc) but I'm wondering if any of you guys know how these drama programs cater to people who don't want to major in it. As a hopeful film production student, I might be too busy to even pursue a minor. Do any of you know my options would be and what colleges would offer me opportunities to continue acting on the side? Thanks much.

bump!! please help

At NYU Tisch, you pretty much have to be a drama major to take any theatre performance classes.

Schools that have a BA theatre program in addition to a film school are perhaps mostly what you should be looking at…

Northwestern has a lot of student-run productions, I’ve heard. It seems likely that non-majors could be cast in those.

Boston University has a film school, and it is possible to do a theatre minor there.

Northwestern offers a minor in theatre and separate acting courses for non-majors. Auditions for both department- and student-sponsored shows are open to all students. There are many acting opportunities - between 60-80 productions are typically put on each year.

There are open arts classes at NYU Tisch and you can minor in Performance Studies. You can find info about that on the NYU Tisch website. There are also many student films and plays that you could plug into just like anyone else can.

But you’re right about the question of how much time you’ll have to act on the side if you’re majoring in film. I can’t answer that for you.

Halflokum, I could be wrong, but Performance Studies at Tisch sounds like it offers courses in the academic analysis of artistic performance…rather than providing performance training per se.

^The actual link to the performance studies minor is here:

But beyond that there are other open arts classes in Tisch that vary by semester and sometimes they DO include acting classes and in some semesters, they don’t. You can search on the classes offered this coming fall semester. I tried to provide the link but it didn’t really work. Search Tisch, open arts fall 2013 and you should be able to see the list. I believe that sometimes it is also possible to get in on a class that isn’t on this list with permission but that’s not something that one should count on.

edit. I think this is the link to the link. Hopefully this will work:
