My D is a junior in HS and would like to take a drama class in NYC during the year--preferably on weekends. Since most of her focus has been MT, she is not certain about which method of acting to study. She's had a little of the Meisner technique. Is there a good class for students that doesn't focus on one particular method--e.g. Meisner, Steller Adler, Lee Strasbourg, but rather teaches a multi-faceted approach giving students exposure to many methods.

I know this is not exactly what you are asking but I just want to mention that Strasberg and Stella Adler studios have weekend programs for high school students. My D has had friends who have done these in high school. I would not avoid these. They are good acting programs. For that matter, CAP21 also has a weekend program for high school students but that is singing, acting, and dancing.

soozievt,
I know both Adler and Strasberg are excellent programs, but I think for expediency a school that doesn’t specialize in one method will be better. If one method works well, she can then hone in on that method in a specialized class. I know it’s difficult to find. So I’m open to all suggestions.

I think given your D’s age, doing Adler or Strasberg on weekends for one year is just one experience and she’ll have other acting classes at other times and in college. Both these programs are some of the better ones on weekends for teens.

Anyway, I had a student last year from Manhattan and she did Strasberg on weekends for a couple of years but she then did HB Studios. I don’t know a lot about HB Studios but I just looked it up and they have Saturday acting classes for teens (no method is specified on the site for that class). You could look into that studio.

Kids who have done the Adler and Strasberg weekend acting program for high school students have gone onto all types of college theater programs (inc. both drama and MT ones).

While this is not exactly what you are looking for, your D may really love it. Applause (in NYC) offers a weekend performance workshop that is more MT and culminates in a performance. The owners are SDM alum. Jeff M. from SDM teaches/directs in this Saturday program for teens.

I know that it was film acting, but her daughter may want to see if she likes it. I always did Theater and then started classes for film and I loved it. When I hear of programs from agents, they say ACTeen. It may make her a well rounded actress.

Early_College,
Thanks for ACTeen reco. My D has not done much of anything re:film acting–yet, so I appreciate a tip on a program that you think is good. I’ll check it out.

Soozievt,
I went to a summer acting program at NYU, app. 10 yrs ago and did some of the professional acting classes. I never went to HB, but lots of kids did. I had forgotten their name. I will also look into William Esper, as that was highly regarded then and reco’d by my teacher, who was in drama dept. Tisch. I don’t know if they have HS stuff, though. I had another teacher at NYU that was affiliated with Atlantic Theatre Company, which I believe was either started by David Mamet or by some of his students. Anyway, ATC was very Meisner based. So, I put it on my list of things to check out in my overall search.

We know about Applause and JM. So sad as you probably know…Thanks for your continued input and expansive knowledge base in theatre!

I do not believe that Atlantic has a teen program.

Did you attend NYU/Tisch?

I don’t know what you are referring to as “sad” and that now has me wondering. If you don’t want to post it, click on my name and go to “send email”. No, I don’t know what is sad and am fearing it is not good.

Soozievt,
I didn’t attend the school as a student, I took summer classes in acting at NYU. One was taught by a teacher at Tisch and one was by an adjunct teacher from Atlantic Theatre Company. I had a great time.

There are many great programs for high school students in the city. My daughter has done Stella Adler and CAP21 most recently and thought they were both excellent. She did AADA quite a few years ago and was not so impressed - too many students, too much time sitting and waiting for your turn. Yes, you can learn from watching but doing is more important than watching - she did learn to knit that year from another girl while they were waiting.

I personally would not recommend ACTeen, we know too many kids who went there and were not happy.

There’s also The Neighborhood Playhouse which is excellent but is Meisner with voice and dancing. You might want to look into Broadway Actors Alliance - it’s another triple threat program but you choose your major and they concentrate in that area more.

Finally you might want to look at the PARF board on Delphi Forums, I believe there are a few threads on this topic.
