hi! :)
so i was just wondering what the drama and theatre arts major is like at columbia college.
i know it is combined with barnard, but as far as CC goes, what is it like for a student there (regarding courses, auditions, productions, internships, etc.)?
are there are students here majoring in that department?
and will it be possible to do a double major in drama & theatre arts and either creative writing or political science (i know they are completely random together ha!)
and what is the JD/MFA program at the graduate school like?
thanks in advance, much appreciated!

I heard somewhere that there is a joint program with Juilliard. You should look it up on Google. Google helps way better than CC.

@house of london: i know about the joint program, however it required a separate application and audition which i did not do. i would consider that sophomore year if accepted to CU and decide to attend
however, i am curious as to how the major at the college alone is…

the juilliard program does not include drama.

i can’t really speak to what it is like to be a major in drama, as i have never done it. it is a pretty small dept, they probably could help you out more than we could. i’d consider contacting them.

it is possible to double major, or to major in one and do a concentration in the other. creative writing is one of the few majors you need to be accepted into (in your soph year) so it is for people serious about it. but there is a creative writing track for people who just want to take classes.

auditions for drama go with first picking to drama majors, but productions are open to other folks in the dept. they just hired a new theatre director, poaching him from UMich.

internships - a lot of the professors/instructors in drama have a ‘day job’ working for various production companies, so consider that an in for internships, but nothing very formal. there are some theatre production studios that post on lionshare. and i can say anecdotally i have 3 friends working in the biz - one is a costume designer, one is a set designer and last works on a production team. of them - only one majored in drama…so majoring doesn’t preclude doing what you want.

my guess is the jd/mfa program is intense. i would contact them about it. my guess is it probably is geared toward folks who wanna do theatre management (one of the theatre concentrations). but overall school of the arts (SOA) at columbia is a pretty phenomenal boutique arts school that is strong throughout its 4 main divisions (film, theatre, visual arts, writing) - probably most known for writing and film. and theatre at columbia works with the undergrad theatre program at barnard - so for example the new guy they hired has a dual appt with the division of theatre.

word on the street is that former Dean Austin Quigley’s pet project is to work to improve and streamline the major. he helped develop it back in the 90s, and it has been keen on making it better and more well known ever since. he is a well known Pinter scholar and he heads an interdepartmental committee on theatre.

wow, thanks @admissionsgeek.
yeah, i know the juilliard program is not for drama - that’s why i didn’t do it.
yeah, the creative writing major is an audition program, and it is something that i am “serious” about, but do you know offhand what they “look for” in that audition sophomore year?
and of course majoring does not preclude what you do, but i would love to do broadway work and hopefully studying drama at columbia would help
also, did you go to columbia? what was your major?

um, from my understanding, it is mostly someone with talent and passion, you take the intro to writing circuit. i know some people who were asked not to continue, and it was pretty clear they weren’t good at it, i mean very clear. i would say the vast majority of kids who do the circuit and do well in the classes are accepted. they put up the wall not because they don’t want people to come in, but to scare too many people from trying and overrunning the department.

i went to columbia, i majored in history and spanish.

oh thanks, yeah i love to write and have been published in a state-wide magazine and such, so i guess that’s somewhat good
:] did you like columbia? what was the best/worst part? was it your number one choice?
sorry for all the questions, but you’ve been extremely helpful so far! :]

:] anyone else have anything to add!?

i loved columbia, i think it is one of the most enriching experiences i could have had.

i love the opportunity - to do everything you could imagine in 4 years. it is unbelievable city with an incredibly rich university and its resources. add to that one of the most inquisitive educational experiences…and you got a great time.

i didn’t like the at times chaotic nature of the city. you know they say when it rains it pours, in new york - it hurricanes. the subway gets flooded, you show up a minute late and people get on you. it is the real world, and it takes a thick skin to know that the good comes with the bad, and deal with it. the university can shelter you to an extent, new yorkers have a different way of approaching situations - often very blunt and direct. it is a big step to move to a big city, for that reason i do know the safe choice is to pick a school that is very insular. in the end though, you realize the bad is rather tame, and the good is quite worth it.

i’ve mentioned on here before it was a place i liked, but i was afraid of the elitism of the school and some of the restrictions so i never called it my #1. i applied mostly because i had given myself a bet to many years before. next thing you know, i started reading up on the school, i visited and stayed with a friend, and well yada yada yada i am columbia’s biggest cheerleader.

well that’s definately good to hear! :]
i really liked your look of things… and i agree with what you said about new york, but that’s also part of what i love about it and would love to live, study, and grow there :]
so i guess it became your #1! ;] ha
what school was your number 1 at the time?

any other info from anyone?? :] thanks again!

=]]]] any ideas, yet? pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee hahaaaaa

no info, but i’m applying to columbia and probably going to end up as a drama major. hey!

@dreamingawake: what year are you?! :]
well, if i go there, be sure to comment me and i’ll let you know about it! =] haha
good luckkkk!!

^ senior, living in london :)

oh awesome, where else in the united states did you apply?!

I’m a potential drama major too. That’s so cool about the UMich guy, I had no idea!

^ hahahahahaha hey gurl ;)

i also applied to UVA, Brandeis and Harvard, and McGill…

^ aw i didn’t apply to any of those…
hah, so maybe we’ll both go to Columbia ha.
have you visited? or been to the city before!? :)

Ooh I like this thread… I was accepted ED and I plan on doing drama and a concentration in something else. Unfortunately, I haven’t really decided what that “something else” is going to be yet :P
