I’ve heard so many great things about U Penn, but I was wondering what drawbacks it has; I’m mostly interested in academic cons, but I’d also like to hear about other aspects to (ex. tuition costs, campus life/environment, etc.)
There are a lot of people on /r/UPenn who complain about the food, but it seems that most colleges have terrible food lol.
@bluebird1234 one con is that can get overwhelming sometimes. This is because you are expected to do well in a rigorous academic environment, get leadership positions in on-campus clubs and organizations this is a huge part of Penn), get good internships / do great research over the summer, and also have an active social life. So it takes a certain kid of person to thrive and enjoy this high octane environment. Of course this does not mean that there aren’t many people at Penn who do not fit this mold.Of course there are. But this description is probably the typical penn kid and also the ideal many people on campus strive for.
@Penn95 do undergrads get to participate in research often, or is it mostly centered on grads?
@bluebird1234 undergrads can easily participate in research. there are many opportunities readily available to undergrads in pretty much all fields.
Take a look at CURF
So I’m planning on visiting Penn during the spring (yay!) and I was wondering if there are any aspects of the campus I should pay attention to or questions I should ask. (for example, what are good STEM clubs at the school, or what professors are there for X subject?) I usually get so carried away with looking around that I forget to get to ask questions and learn more about the college in detail.
I’m also thinking about visiting a class; any suggestions for interesting STEM classes I should visit?
Try to meet some students.
Investigate your potential major in advance.
If you are a female Computer Science major, for example, ask if you might be able to meet with someone from WiCS. (Women in Comp Sci. ) You would need to set it up in advance though.
@much2learn how would I request to meet a student? I saw a meet and greet option on their website for visiting a specific school like engineering or nursing, but I’m not sure if that’s the same thing.
If you are a female who is interested in CS, you could contact WiCS and ask if you could meet a female CS student when you visit. Whoever monitors their mail may be willing to arrange for you to meet one of the members when you visit. You could discuss their experience in the CS program at Penn. The WiCS email is pennwics@gmail.com
Also, I found the email on their website: http://wics.cis.upenn.edu
I might be too late and useless here, but Penn offers great programs to interact with current students. I myself work for the admissions department in organizing such interactions, DM me if you need help/want to visit a student at Penn
