Heyy, I have a question regarding how badly a C might affect me:
I have a 3.9 uw cumulative gpa, and I am applying Columbia SEAS early decision.
I had a C in math last term, and I am pretty concerned about it. However, I was LITERALLY the only one in my math class who passed the term (and I stated this in my appP. Do you think Columbia will be able to look past my C due to this special situation or do you think I am doomed?
I’m a bit surprised that you were the only person who passed the class. Where are the parents who would normally be pounding on the door of the principal demanding that this teacher either learn to teach or learn to grade? It just doesn’t sound credible - unless your guidance counselor is backing this story up in their letter of rec? I’d have a word with the GC. It’s the kind of strange thing in an application that could result in a phone call to the guidance counselor’s office for verification.
Hello N´s mom. Yes, I have already talked to my counselor and she added it to her rec letter. Nonetheless, I think I should have clarified that I go to school in Argentina, where gpa is not required for college admissions (they are open, even at the most prestigious universities) hence no one cares if they failed one class
HS in Argentina - okay, this starts to make more sense. You should have mentioned this up front.
Where GPA isn’t required for college admissions, the grading systems get a bit …arbitrary. As long as you’ve explained and your GC has validated that a C was the highest grade in the class, it shouldn’t be held against you - as long as they notice the explanation.
