Dreadful Required Classes

Hello everyone,

I am worried about my course selection of my sophomore year. My friends have grown up in this district and have taken all of the useless classes required for graduation in middle school. I, however, am new to the district and haven’t completed any of the required classes except 0.5 of P.E. and 0.5 of Personal Finance. My sophomore schedule is as follows:

2 semesters of Chemistry
2 semesters of Enriched English II
2 semesters of Enriched Algebra II
2 semesters of Principles of Engineering
2 semesters of French II
1 semester of Drawing and Painting I
1 semester of Communications (speech)
1 semester of Wellness (health)
1 semester of Fitness Weight Training (P.E.)

This schedule is just not as challenging as some of my peers’ schedules, but I can say that my Junior and Senior years will be far more challenging than theirs. I think I have good EC’s, have good plans for the next three summers, and have rigorous schedules for my last two years of high school. I just completed freshman year with a 4.0 GPA. My school is economically disadvantaged and doesn’t offer Honors, IB, or hardly any AP classes, but does offer lots of college courses (which I’ll be taking). Will my plethora of required classes during my sophomore year affect my chances of getting into top schools?

Thanks.

No. But you must take every advantage you can of those few AP classes offered, you need to pick out everything unique and related activities to you your school offers, that creates you as a strong applicant and fighting for what you want.

Take the most rigorous course that you can (that you can handle) and you should be fine. If your school does not offer a lot of AP’s then I’d look into self-studying some courses of taking them online.

@pinklinks This coming year, I decided to take two online courses at my community college (one each semester). I think I’m also going to self study AP Psych since it’s considered one of the “easy” AP exams. Thanks for the input
