Go get yourself one of the many excellent books on writing college application essays. They are full of ideas and examples. I like Harry Bauld’s book but there are a number of others out there.

I’ve mentioned this site before in previous posts - it has some good advices! Look at the archives (Nov/Dec 2009). I’ve also heard good things about one of editor on that site (Brian).

Try and think about an experience that happened to you, something that was meaningful. Write about it. Its only 500 words which is about 3 paragraphs. The first is what the experience is, the second is fill and the third is what you learned from it. Not so difficult when you break it down. Jot down your thoughts.

My daughter wrote about photography class and how she found out that she had a talent, how much she loves it and how she got involved with the community and school thru that hobby.

Hope that helps!!!

I agree with M’s Mom about Bauld’s book. And yes, starting an essay is very difficult. It’s probably best to try to just dive in on a few tries with no expectations of a great essay the first time or two, but just to start writing.

So my advice in a nutshell: START WRITING

Don’t worry if the first few tries are any good. Just start writing. Something will come. Good luck.

Exactly. Just start writing an anecdote about something you did or witnessed. Then write what you learned from it and why.

You should not try to write your life story in 500 words. Just tell a true story that happened. Why do you remember it? What have you learned from it?

It does not matter what it is, only that you write it in your own voice and that you proff read it well.

tahnsk guys, do you know where to find any examples of good winning essays? aloha

Here’s a link to the book M’s Mom mentioned. It’s really good.
