Dream college game

hmmm, thats a tough one, jkjkkj. It might be slightly too big for you (17,000), but the University of North Carolina sounds like a great fit.

A smaller alternative- William and Mary

jk-- I hear Northwestern, Tufts, University of Rochester

tulsadem-- Duke, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Michigan, Wisconsin, Maryland, Indiana, Penn State (some above your target size, but satisfy requirements in other ways-- PSU, Michigan, and Maryland in particular have extremely competitive honors programs).

I like seeing everybody’s criteria. These particulars (I think) are extremely important and often get overshadowed by the idea of attending a super-elite school.

My dream college is…
-great professors, down to earth
-everyone does pass fail
-great food/dorms/facility/etc
-awesome people
-easy to graduate, as long as you do the work
-very prestigious
-great social scene
-full ride (for me) because everyone likes me

Let us call this place Hyps University

^Easy to graduate from, very prestigious, great social scene, limited grading…

Brown.

My dream college:
-Free.
-Super-nerdy.
-Completely unknown.

Cooper Union or Franklin W. Olin?
If you’re into those fields, that is.

for me:
-smart, interesting, students
-laid-back atmosphere (not obsessed with studying, students do a decent amount of work but it’s not over-the-top)
-generally liberal/accepting
-not tiny (> 2000 students)
-college town or city
-politically active/aware
-small (or nonexistent) core curriculum
-warm climate (preferred)

For the other guy - Deep Springs(if your a guy)

alizarda -
Most schools.
UNC, UVa, Brown, UCSB, Stanford, UCLA, Rice, etc.

alizarda-
wesleyan
brown
unc (ish… liberal-ish for the south, but with warmer weather… idk about core)
pomona (idk about core here though)

My criteria:
Any size is good
Preppy… not too too liberal but not overly Greek
Strong in either math or operations research, but also good english/music deparments
Strong reputation
Actual Campus (like not BU or NYU)
Approachable Professors
Hot Guys… :)

-Big school: preferably around 10,000 or higher
-Not in the middle of nowhere, some type of city or town with enough to do
-Has a distinguishable campus, no overlap with a city
-Good journalism program and/or opportunities
-Not totally obsessed with studying and has good social and party opportunities
-Not too Greek
-Cares about sports teams, preferably D-I, and has to have a football team
-At least a few hours away from DC
-No strong religious affiliation

steelerfan- I’m no expert but i think most D-1 sports schools have pretty big frat scenes. I can’t think of any that meet all but a few that meet some of your criteria are U Washington, Northwestern, and U Oregon.

Now my criteria:

-In or in close proximity to a large city
-generally liberal w/ similar surrounding city
-2000-15000 student pop.
-has a pretty distinguishable campus
-no frat scene over 30 or 40%
-No religious affiliation
-No tech-y schools
-geographic diversity (no more than maybe 50 or 60% in-state)

Everyone’s skipping over me!!

Not sure about the religious affiliation, though I know none of these are overtly religious:
Columbia
Wesleyan
Pomona (A lot of in-state but California schools are always largely instate)
UPenn
Harvard
Tufts

My criteria:
Any size is good
Preppy… not too too liberal but not overly Greek
Strong in either math or operations research, but also good english/music deparments
Strong reputation
Actual Campus (like not BU or NYU)
Approachable Professors
Driveable distance to a large city

Classof09: I don’t know of any school that meets your description. But a close one is Cal Poly SLO. It does not have a great English or music department, and it is a bit of a drive to SF and LA. Meets everything else though–well, it’s hit or miss on the professors–but isn’t that the case everywhere?

My dream school:

Residential

Beautiful campus in a natural environment–near a forest or at least some trees

Not too cold (highs at least 50 or higher) and not too hot (not higher than 80) for most of the year

Not in a desert

Has either a theatre arts general, directing, or stage management MA, MFA or PhD program

Low Greek influence

I’d prefer a low alcohol and drug scene, but I think this will be hard to find

Difficulty in entrance: selective to easy–prestige is NOT important

Football team (any division) would be nice, but not the most important

A thriving arts community with opportunities to go to classical concerts, visit a variety of art exhibits, and watch a variety of plays

Either good financial aid or tuition/room/board less than $15,000 per year

Campus has “traditions”

Traditional architecture is a plus; contemporary architecture is minus; California Mission style is OK, as is anything in between traditional and contemporary.

Approachable professors

Ability to take classes outside of major’s department and Gen Ed requirements

At least 200 miles away from LA

Has a German language or German studies program (I want to do my thesis/disseration on Brechtian dramatic literature.)

Has good connections with the entertainment industry or a good internship program for the arts.

avcastner- I don’t know any of them particularly well, but a small-ish school in WA/OR perhaps?

I guess Brown for all past and future posts of this thread. And if that doesn’t fit, I’m calling up my trusty Dartmouth and Duke.

Thanks, I win.

eh…if you are looking for a school that deemphasizes pre-professionalism…Duke may not be the best fit.

avcastner- i think Brown meets most of your criteria.

UNC or UVa, though they might be a bit greek.

My criteria:
Any size is good
Preppy… not too too liberal but not overly Greek
Strong in either math or operations research, but also good english/music deparments
Strong reputation
Actual Campus (like not BU or NYU)
Approachable Professors
Driveable distance to a large city

William and Mary! It’s like an hour and a half from D.C. (which isn’t bad at all). Otherwise, it definitely meets your criteria. The Greek scene is there, but very tame, the campus is gorgeous, and every student there I’ve talked to says the professors are extremely approachable. Plus, it’s definitely very preppy, especially for a state school, and while politically it might slightly lean left, the social culture of the student body is rather conservative (not a huge party school, not a bunch of random hookups.)

I already posted my criteria earler, but here it is again:
-has between 4,000 and 15,000 undergrads
-is not on the west coast or Florida
-is politically liberal but with a strong and visible conservative minority
-is not more than 50% Greek
-has a campus (in other words, not NYU or BU)
-is not a total pressure cooker where students generally don’t make use of the library on a saturday morning
-at the same time, the admit rate is below 50% and students are very driven and goal-oriented.
-has an above average percentage of African-American and Latino students
-students don’t look down upon those who smoke/drink
-a school where you can easily find someone who you can have a valuable political discussion with.
-at the same time, partying is far from the only social activity on campus
-accepting enviornment towards LGBT students
-a good political science department
-has a sizeable number of students from lower income households

 • has a good ammount of geographic diversity

Tulsadem - Dartmouth perhaps?

My criteria:

 • Small LAC under 2000
 • Located on the West Coast
 • Great campus and close-knit students, residential
 • Strong politics department
 • Intellectual vibe
 • Few requirements
 • Unique students, warm weather

Definitely Claremont-McKenna. Sounds like a perfect fit.

Yall feel free to throw out more suggestions for me. My criteria is two posts above.

lol i always thought dartmouth would be like a hell on earth for me but i guess there’s a lot more to it than i think

I don’t know about requirements, but Claremont McKenna has a great politics department, and nearby Pomona has the intellectual vibe… Both are part of the Claremont Consortium and you can take courses at both schools. Another school of the consortium is Pitzer, which has a far more “alternative” and “liberal” feel. The two other schools involved are Harvey Mudd (Science & Technology) and Scripps (all-girls). Each school is very small, but the communities intermingle.

haha same criteria again!!

My criteria:
Any size is good
Preppy… not too too liberal but not overly Greek
Strong in either math or operations research, but also good english/music deparments
Strong reputation
Actual Campus (like not BU or NYU)

Driveable distance to a large city
