dream or reality, ...or both?

hello, well, it's so good to see how others are passionate about art!
I always loved art but never thought (and still doubt) I will be working in the area. I guess that's because of this general conception, "art does not get me a bread".

The confusing part is that I do other things pretty well, too. I mean, come on, if one works hard, the outcome will be more likely to be good than bad. Like, politics and finances, I do have some interests. However, I don't love anything as much as Art History!!! It's just so fascinating to see artists' works. It reflects the culture, people, the whole history!!

My parents have recommended that I should work in politics or in finances and have the art aside as a hobby. My teachers, and friends, too.

Politics and finances are oooookay.. I know that if I decide to do either one, I would work hard 100%. But one thing keeps me from going to the easy way.

What if I could be happier?

I frequently think of the amount of money I should make before the retirement so that I could work in art even without any salary.

Is there a kind of job in the art area that generally makes as good as the invest banker or the lobbyist??

thanks in advance!

anybody???? plz!

I don't know if I have enough experience to comment yet since I am only starting my freshmen year of college next week. Investment bankers? Their salaries are usually in the 6-digit range (even starting salary) and they make quite a lot. Sorry, but jobs in the art related field don't really pull in as much, unless you're a director of a design company, museum, or even an art dealership. But even if you're not at the top of these fields, you can definitely work your way up there so that your salary grows.

I think you'll be more satisfied in life if you do what makes you the happiest. All the money you make as an investment banker might not make you happy if you don't like your job. Also, becoming an investment banker or whatever might not necessarily guarantee you easy money. So... just follow your passion and work hard, you'll pull through as long as you put your mind to it. I went through the same dilemna as you did before applying for colleges because I also do well in basically all subjects, plus my Dad kept badgering me about how I'd be poor if I became a designer. Nonetheless, I'm willing to take up this fiscal challenge because I am more interested in art/design than money itself.

Hope that helps...

thanks! It really did help. I think in deep inside of myself, I was waiting for somebody to tell me that. I have not decided yet, but I started to have some confidence in whatever I decide because of what you said....

PS: I love fashion, too! it's every girls' affection! Good luck! I hope to see your clothes on fashion week someday.

Do what you love and follow your heart no offense but even though Investment banking pulls in alot that job sounds soo boring to me!!! I mean come on basically you sit in a cubicle on the computer from 5-9 and go home and blah blah blah sounds soo routine!!

do art history as your undergrad, and do something else for grad school(something like investment banking or any safe career).

i don't think you'd be good at an art school. it doesn't seem like you would fit in well. i say this because you need to be living and breating it with every pulse your heart beats. and you have many interests, and by going to an art school, you're basically putting yourself in the situation of never being able to know anything else but art.

No problem, but I'm actually majoring in Inustrial Design, so hopefully you'll get to see the sports cars I design. haha.

"do art history as your undergrad, and do something else for grad school(something like investment banking or any safe career)."

Don't grad schools look at the applicant's undergrad major?? Doesn't it matter somewhat significantly?? Is what undergrad school I am from matters more important than what major I have?

Te~chan, when I heard "design", "fashion" poped in my head at first. lol
SPORTS CAR DESIGN is just GREAT!!! I bet you will be so popular among girls! lol

NerdyUSCgurl-
thanks for your reply! yeah- I def. think that art history is more fun than investment banking, too. I wonder if those investment bankers get any butt problems because of the fact that they are sitting on the chair all the time!!!

I think i'd be more popular among girls if I were a guy ;-). LOL! (Do I sound like a guy on this forum?)

okay, I thought I was a little bit feminist but guess that I still need to work on it, to be not called, a boring, "old-fashioned". haha-
That's just even better! I mean, it's just great that you do something people usually do not expect. (well, at least I did not-) You can design an awesome sports car girls understand!!! good luck!
