i guess i'd just like to know if it's a match, safety, or reach?! THANKS!

My memory is a little rusty, but when my OOS/legacy kid applied I got a letter from UNC, sort of apologizing that they only accept 40% of legacies who were OOS, or something to that effect. So being a legacy helps the odds but does not guarantee anything. My kid did get in, but had stellar stats, ECs, LORs etc. Just make sure you keep up the great work. Ask admissions for the average accepted OOS GPAs and SATs. They are certainly higher than for instate. If you are in that range, your chances are pretty good (or become a recruited athlete!!). The big schools accept somewhat by the numbers–if you don’t have the scores, it’s a reach for anyone OOS at UNC–60% of legacies from OOS don’t get in.

My kids both got in oos and no one in my family has ever gone to UNC. My son chose to attend (is a current freshman); my daughter is at UVA – we live in Georgia. Daughter was IB, son did AP. Both had good SATs and good AP test scores (4s and 5s). Both did mock trial and student government, but neither was class president or anything. Son was scholar athlete and eagle scout, president of NHS, both kids did Governors Honors Program. Both received likely letters before their eventual acceptances. Both in Top 10 of their classes of +/- 250. Good luck!
