Dream School

Hi, I am currently a Junior in high school, and was wondering if I could get any suggestions to how I may better my chances into getting Berkeley after CC. I'm in the top classes at my school however with the strong asian competitive majority, i feel a loss of self-esteem when comparing my gpa to theirs. Getting into Berkeley has been my dream school for a while now, and having any form of improving my chances to getting in would really help. Thanks!

Current Grades:
GPA: 3.5 UW 3.75 W
APs: Human Geography(4), Current are US History, Environmental Science, and Calculus.
Ex.Cs: Volunteer in a Club for a year
3 Year wrestler
Business club member

For us to have a better overall picture:
Are from in our out of state?
Have you taken any other AP classes or honors classes?
Unweighted GPA, weighted GPA?
SAT I, SAT II, and ACT scores?
Extracurriculars (apart from the ones named; in fact, what was the one you volunteered for? a lot of passion for it that maybe you can talk about in your essay?), sports, awards, recognitions, unique circumstances, leadership?

:)

i mentioned my gpa and i havent taken the sat yet, I’m took a California High School Proficiency Exam which pretty much gives me my diploma, so i plan on going to CC after my junior year. as for extracurriculars i havent been so involved until this year i felt it seems kind of necessary so I’m a little behind on those. Other than that, I’m pretty much and above average student.

you’re going to CC? All your high school records are irrelevant when applying to UC Berkeley from a CC.

Well * guess im just asking if the grades i have now, and most likely have in CC, will it be enough to get in or will hi have to work harer?

if you go to a CC and can pull at least a 3.7, then you should be in ok shape to try. I wouldn’t try with anything less. This coming from someone who took the CHSPE route as well.

Alright, thanks! That helps a lot also do u think extracurriculars are very important when applying, and does Berkeley look for that “it” factor, because i really don’t believe anything particular about me that stands out, just my drive to be successful.

Strong grades and a compelling essay are more important than having fantastic extracurriculars.

Oh okay. Yeah that would make the most sense. Also, I have heard that Berkeley is very competitive, and I’m not really the top student in my class more like top 50% since I’m taking tough Aps. Do you recommend I try to pursue another college?

My only ecs were tutoring and a job history in the field I was majoring in. It was really my essay that did it for me… well my appeal letter that is, haha.

If you really want to go to Berkeley, just try as hard as you can. Don’t quit because it’s competitive, especially since CCC is totally cake.

Mark Berkeley on the application, but also check off other UCs for relatively cheap peace of mind. Good luck!
