Dreaming high?

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to this forum. I'm an Indian (obviously) from New Delhi and my dream is to get into U.S. for Aerospace engineering (Aeronautics) :) I'm currently in Class XII and I wanted to ask the people on this forum (as everybody seems so helpful) about my chances at some certain universities with enough aid to bring the total annual cost down to a maximum of about $16,000. My academic credentials are as follows :

SAT I score (2nd attempt) - 2060 (690 CR ; 680 Math ; 690 Writing)
SAT I score (1st attempt) - 1920 (630 CR ; 660 Math ; 630 Writing)

My ECAs are as follows :

-Member of Debate Society - 6 debates till now (2nd position in one, qualified preliminary rounds of 2)
-Model United Nations - 1 MUN - Best Position paper award (National level)
-Member of Environment Council
-Almost 2 years of dance at DanceworX - contemporary jazz/ballet (have done 3 stage shows)
-Scholar badge holder for year 2009 - 2010 (Class X) and 2010-2011 (Class XI)
-Class IX Aggregate - 79%
-Class X Board GPA - 9.2/10
-Class XI percentage - 80% (9th in class)

The colleges I plan to apply to are :
1) Purdue
2) UT Austin
3) Texas A&M
4) Univ. Of Minnesota - Twin Cities
5) Arizona SU
6) Univ. of Arizona
7) Ohio SU - Columbus
8) Georgia Tech.
9) Illinois Institute of technology - Chicago

Any advice or any response about my chances at the universities above (with aid) will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys :)

Sorry… I’ve posted this in What’s my chance forum so this can be deleted :)

U will surely get into Purdue and also probably to UT Austin and Georgia too … I don’t know about the other colleges (its not that u don’t enough scores ,but I don’t know their stats ) … Anyway ,congrats ,u have good scores !!

Thank you so much :)

Desidreams,

You are in the ballpark for all those schools.

For e.g. at Texas a&m applicants in the top quarter of the graduating class with a 1300 combine sat math/cr scores have a very high chance of getting in.

IIT Chicago has an acceptance rate of 60%. OSU 76%, but they do a holistic review not just scores.

These schools all clump together though. I would get admission at a ballpark school but then try and get into a dream school. If you don’t swing you bat you are not going to get 4 unless you edge past slips.

Top-5 graduate
Education Counselor, New Delhi

UT Austin accepts students that are among 10% of their graduating class. I don’t know if you do rankings…But I would say you are definitely in at Univ of Arizone (acceptance rate is 100%).

1) Purdue (Perhaps)
2) UT Austin (Perhaps)
3) Texas A&M (Ye)
4) Univ. Of Minnesota - Twin Cities (perhaps)
5) Arizona SU (Ye)
6) Univ. of Arizona (Ye)
7) Ohio SU - Columbus (perhaps)

Purdue has a top program for engineering and its admissions should not be taken for granted by an international who lives abroad. The stated comments are just my opinion.

I think you have a shot at all these universities.

Sorry to stalk this thread ( I am not an Indian :stuck_out_tongue: ) but a friend of mine in Bangladesh got into civil engineering at Purdue and UT Austin with similar stats as yours

^ remember that this is undergrad, so technically the admissions is random to some extent. His essay could have been stellar…who knows.

Thanks for the advice guys :)

LOL his essays were not stellar they were just decent

Getting into an public university is easy at two levels for an international:

If you can pay for it

These universities would like to have international students join their ranks so if you can meet the first condition and have proper grades and scores it becomes quite easy

Well admissions at most publics is easy, but that is not true for the top publics which hold typical ivy league standards for internationals.
I’m just thinking that purdue might be harder to get in since it has a top notch program. But OP has a decent chance at the uni.

Dude trust me, you’ll get into ALL of these. Apply to better places. Trust me.

AND remember, EVERY INDIAN GETS INTO PURDUE.

@anirudhcc !! You are right !! And I appreciate your positive posts !! U give us a lot of energy and it feels a lot better :)

Thanks for the advice aniruddhcc. :)

I see you’re in Carnegie (WOW). Did you get any aid there?

Carnegie Mellon doesn’t provide financial aid to international students.

@Desidream : An advise from my side is that , you should try applying to schools ranked better than these . Also if you have the will , then Retake the SAT and Try to raise your maths score to something like 750 or above . Then if luck favors ( it will mostly) , even you will change your location to CM and study at CMU  ?. PS : your score is not bad at all , but for CMU …you might want to raise your math score a bit to increase your chance of getting admitted  !!! - yours faithfully : the positive

Thanks for the advice thepositive.
But I really don’t think I have the will or the time to give the SAT again. But I shall definitely heed your advice about applying to better schools. Thanks a lot :)

@dd : Welcome . Ohh , that’s ok … Don’t get yourself stressed !! Its ok … You will make to the best … I really don’t know about the scholarships or else would have helped you . The fact is , most of the colleges havn’t shown a financial aid for Internationak students as such in their website . But yet , Purdue (which is a very gud school for Aero) , might give you a scholarship (need based) because your scores would be on the upper line . Just send them a mail . Moreover , if you really need a scholarship , then CMU might not be your best bet because they are expensive and more selective . And the second fact is , many colleges do give scholarships after first year ,if you be in the top 1% and enter deans list . But that will depend on your performance there . So there is a piece of risk in that … Btw do you have someone in US ?? Or are you the firstt person to go and study in US for BS from your first circle ( like me  ) !! Anyway , best of luck … Let me conclude by telling you that , if you get a scholarship at purdue , then you will never regret joining there , but if they don’t give , then you have a lot more schools matching your stats  …All the best

Well… From my family, I’m petty much the first person who’ll go out of India for an undergraduation. Thanks a lot thepositive :)

I’m really loving it here in CC. Everybody’s so helpful! :D

@Desidreams : Welcome!! We are born to help each other . Or else there would be no meaning for life :-P
