Dreaming of NYU... should I wake up?

Okay, so here's the deal.

I just finished my 12th year, here in Canada, I'm coming back for a semester to upgrade a touch.

I want to go to NYU. I WILL go to Columbia for grad school, but right now I want to go to NYU.

So... there are only a couple.. MAJOR things standing in my way:

SAT/ACT - I'm pretty smart, but Science and Math are just not my thing. I used to be really good at Science but once I figured out I wanted to go into Journalism, I stopped taking science courses because I didn't think I would need them.

The Marks - I'm the biggest slacker ever. I've got some pretty decent averages and some not so great ones as well. The thing with my transcript is that there's no consistency.

Financing isn't an issue. I think I'd worry about that when everything else fell into place.

So in order to apply for Early Acceptance (Deadline Nov 1.) I'd need to take my SAT in October (Forgot the date - too lazy to look it up). Is studying myself worth it?

I'm just trying to be realistic and I feel as if I'm setting the bar too high in this case. NYU is a really good school, yet I feel as if it IS the school for me.

I just want your opinion as to if this is likely or not likely to happen.
Brutal honesty is cool lol, I live for it.

Oh and if it helps (which I doubt) I'm active in my journalism community. I've written for a University Newspaper for about 6 months and have been a staff member of a magazine for at least 7. As well as own a pretty successful blog.

“Financing isn’t an issue. I think I’d worry about that when everything else fell into place.”
Either your parents are wealthy or you will graduate from NYU with a boatload of debt. NYU is regarded as very poor in giving financial aid even to Americans.

In terms of admission standards, NYU would be comparable to or easier than McGill and Queen’s in most programs.

lol. I had a feeling that would come across as an “I’m wealthy” statement, which in fact is nowhere near the case. I just don’t let money stop me. If there’s a will, there’s a way!

Coming from Canada, NYU is probably one of the worst financial decisions you could make for university. It’s not good enough to justify the cost in comparison to local schools, the financial aid is terrible if not non-existent, and NYC will drain your wallet. You could probably get in, but it’s probably wiser not to go =/

Sorry, but I agree with the above posters. NYU is horrible with aid. The total cost is outrageous when you see where NYU truly stands among other private schools.

You would probably get in seeing that you are an astute student who seems to actually care about your education, but IMHO the ticket price is not worth the show.

If you just want to go to college in New York City for whatever reason, look into the CUNY schools. They’re cheaper.

Umm…from what I know, NYU isn’t that good a school. So costs is definitely an issue. Ever though of this - what happens if you can’t get a job after graduating? If you’re into journalism, competition for jobs is even tougher. So I think that finances are definitely something to seriously think about. I’m an international student applying to Canada and the States. Even if I do get offers from top notch universities in the states without any aid, I would choose Canadian universities as they are a lot cheaper (I got Permanent Residency :)). Do well in undergrad, get a good job, one that will hopefully finance my grad school, and go to an awesome grad school. That’s just my opinion anyway.
As for your chances of getting in, I can’t really tell. They look at your ECs and your grades along with your essays that you have submitted. Plus, at the end, I think the entire process is slightly random. Considering you’re gonna be an international applicant, that might be a hook, or it may be the opposite.
