Dress code for interview weekends

I am invited to an interview weekend at Northwestern. What can i expect from the weekend? Dress code?

interview or visiting weekend?

interview - probably something formal and comfortable at the same time because you want to present yourself nicely, so that they'll accept you, yet be able to move about easily

visiting weekend - no one really cares what you wear because they already accepted you so dress in what is most comfortable for you and the weather around you

for the interview, you should definitely wear a dark suit. its pretty formal.

Thanks for your help! I was considering dressing quite formal but was also afraid to come there overdressed. I've only been to west coast universities and there everything is quite relaxed. I am also invited to two other schools for visiting weekends, but for those visits I am not worried about clothing :)

It really depends on your field.

I'm in biology, and I'm sitting at an interview weekend right now in khaki pants and a collared shirt. Other people around me are wearing the same. Someone wearing a dark suit would be way overdressed in this field.

I just completed an interview day at Northwestern, in the humanities. I wore jeans and a nice shirt. So did many of the professors, as well as all the students with one exception (suit and tie, and definitely overdressed). Then again, who knows, maybe they'll refuse me and accept the suited guy.

My advice: khakhis and a white shirt for men, and bring a tie in your pocket in case you need it. For women, anything seems to go, as usual.

Thanks for all advice. I am really looking forward to see the schools and meet the students and professors. I still can't believe its true that they want to meet me. Puppydog - I wish you best luck with your Northwestern application!

Ok, the other posters in this thread make an excellent point: Nena, what field are you interviewing in? In my interviews, anyone that wasnt wearing a dark suit definitely stuck out like a sore thumb.

I have applied to one of the programs at the Business School.

Whoa! That changes everything. Suit.

I had a visitors/interview weekend this past weekend. I didn't know what the dress code would be so I dressed buisness-casual, skirt button up shirt, heels. I was definatly the most dressed up person for the dinner Friday night. People wore jeans, frumpy tshirts, etc. I took it down a notch for Saturday, black pinstripe pants with a cute white shirt. People were about half & half with dressing up. Many of the guys came in suits, a few in jeans again. So um, I think everyone was confused about how to dress haha. I just figured, if I'm being interviewed, I'm going to look nice.
