Dress for alumni interview

What is the appropriate dress for an alumni interview (off-campus)? I've seen many answers that say business casual and many that say nice jeans are okay. Other colleges specifically say nice jeans are okay, but Pomona's website doesn't say one way or the other.

Has dressing well ever hurt anyone? Short of wearing formalwear, which would be weird, just dress for the occasion and eliminate the worry. Slacks and a tie for guys, nice dress for girls may not get you points, but you won’t walk out of the interview thinking “I underdressed for this.”

Dressing well for the interview shows respect for the interviewer and you never know what you’re going to get with alumni. Some may be real sticklers for being respected. The low risk option is to go better than average.

Pomona is one of the few schools I’ve seen that indicates an interview is ‘important’ in admission decisions. However, my D came out of her on campus interview feeling it had gone badly, and she was still admitted. I would take a clue from the location of the interview. An interview at Starbucks may be a bit more casual than one in an office setting. You want to look nice but be comfortable also. Can’t tell your gender, but business casual for women includes nice pants.

When D interviewed with an alum at the nearby Starbucks, she wore a nice pair of cords since it was cold out. Wear something comfortable (you will be sitting for 30-60 minutes) but nice.

Good luck!
