Dress up for skype interview?

I was thinking of wearing a button up shirt (no tie or jacket). Will this seem "over the top?" My friend laughed at me when I said I was dressing up for a Skype interview.

ummmmmm … unless for some reason you were audio only, it’s not over the top.

How is that over the top? You don’t even have to wear pants.

Should I wear a tie?

I had one with princeton last night, through skype. I wore a tshirt with a hoodie over it and the girl wore a tshirt. I doubt you need to dress up, really. I thought to at first as well, but then I was like “I’m not putting a button up on just to sit in front of the computer.”
Just be comfy! sweatpants all the way

I would wear the button-up shirt, top button undone, no tie.

Agree with familyof3boys

I agree with the 2 posts above and would also add- never take it too seriously when your friends laugh at your ideas. Your instincts were right here, and they often will be. Fearing being overdressed (and looking “silly”) can be a sign of immaturity. Fearing being underdressed (and showing disrespect) is a more mature concern.

agree with familyof3boys.

don’t wear a t-shirt, just in case the interviewer might find that disrespectful.
a button-up is perfect, it’s casual but also formal as well.

when in doubt, always be overdressed rather than underdressed.

Other reminders for Skype interview - Be in a quiet part of the house where your sibling or pet won’t interrupt and considering sitting in front of a plain wall so there is no distracting clutter behind you on the interviewers screen.
