I'm a high school student starting an internship @ a research institute (biology type things), and I am having a hard time figuring out what to wear for the first day. I'm worried that if I dress too nicely (skirt + nice top) I'll look like I'm not dressed to do research and that the outfit isn't practical. However, I don't want to look like I don't care. Would wearing a nice top and jean capris be way to casual?

I have to wear close-toed shoes, but they didn't specify whether they had to cover the entire foot, so I'm not sure if ballet flats are acceptable. I might just end up bringing an extra pair of shoes...

It's also quite warm, so I don't think I can wear a nice pair of pants.

Thanks!

I don’t think it’s necessary to dress super nicely. Whenever I do research stuff (including the first time I met my mentor) I just wear normal clothes. Especially IN the lab though, nice, uncomfortable clothes can be really annoying. You’re in a lab, not an office.

yeah, I’m just worried that I’ll show up and all the other interns will be dressed nicely and I’ll look like the slacker :)

You should call and ask

If you want you can go for something sort of… in between. Like leggings and a comfortable, but nice shirt? That way you’ll be comfortable but still look nice if necessary. Boots are also an option if you’re worried about the whole foot-covering thing.

Yeah, that’s what I would normally do, but it’s supposed to be 90 degrees so boots might be really uncomfortable same with leggings. But thanks!
