my friends tell me vandy's student body is very preppy and a lot of the kids dress well. what are popular styles or advice if you want to rush a frat. thanks in advance

there is a sizable amount of preppy kids but there are kids with all sorts of styles. you can honestly wear whatever you feel comfortable in, but certain frats do have generally the same style. heres some advice i would give if you want to rush a frat (im not saying you need to do these things, but these are the norms):

Id rock the horse (Polo) or gator (Lacoste) as much as possible

Do NOT wear jean shorts

A lot of southern girls don't like the guys who use tons of gel in their hair.

Seersucker, Madras, and Khakis are all popular

Croakies are popular

You don't need to pop collar; although there are kids who do this (whatever you prefer)

Short sleeve button down shirts aren't popular; its better to roll up the sleeves

Visors not really in; baseball hats are fairly common (they usually look kind of beat up and thrown around)

Theres kids with monogramed shorts. I think the monogramed pants look stupid but thats just my personal opinion.

New Balance type shoes are cool; or cole haan type top siders/ boat shoes for better occasions.

just be yourself during rush and meet as many brothers as you can. hope that helps.

wow I saw the preppy thing on a lot of these college boards. I say polo shirts and khakis are very safe. A lot of preppy people well A&F and holllisters and such. Preppy boys at my school wear button down shirts (with rolled up sleeves to elbow), and a baseball cap is quite common. Preppy girls wear ae, miniskirts, boots, etc.. I dunno if its the style everywhere but many of my preppy friends wear converses all the time. Anyways, good luck to you

Is this for real?

yes and no. If you're serious about dressing preppy and being a "vanderbrat" , than you need to know what to wear. It's not as though somebody formulated the rules, "that's just he way it is". Now, if you don't give a hoot and just wanna dress normally, then ignore all this to spare yourself a nasty death from laughing too much. Nobody's gonna blacklist you.

gratefuldead- you need the tie-dyed T thing. It's important.

if by some miracle i get into vandy (rd, my first choice right now) i would be completely out of synch with the style...how can the majority of the students afford such expensive clothes when the tuition is 40K+? its nuts to me. HANES ALL THE WAY!

Dont' worry buddy, if I go, its hoodies all the way.

only about 1/3 of guys rush frats, and only about half of them are preppy ... my advice was just to help those rushing certain frats not brand the student body with a certain image. theres a mix of every type of style and you will definitely find your niche as the majority of kids wear whatever they like

I dunno about you folks but I plan on wearing t-shirts and jeans all season(s) long. Preppy clothes to me are uncomfortable

Here's an idea- dress however you want to. If your style makes certain groups of people avoid you, then think of it as a passive way to keep from falling in with disgusting, elitist jerks.

Abercrombie, Hollister, American Eagle, Converses = Preppy? Pick up a copy of Lisa Birnbach's The Preppy Handbook if you are really this clueless.

Ya know Grace, I was really trying to get my son interested in Vandie, but you aren't helping...

Eh, what do you expect coming from a school heavily endowed by a robber-baron?

Keep in mind it's Nashville, not NYC, Paris, Tokyo.... I doubt people pay much attention to clothes. In fact, I think the rule is NOT to be too stylish cos people would start to think you are weird, a whoe or gy (if you are a male).

First of all, it's Vand*y*, and second despite the fact it's Nashville, it's Vandy and if you think Abercrombie is "preppy", you're in for a suprise (note that this is coming from somebody who has no qualms about wearing something that bought at Wal-mart gasp).

(But in all honestly, you will find tons more people who wear normal clothes then the latest fashions from Milan or wherever.)

The simple fact is, you can wear what you want. If you wanna be cool and preppy (with whatever brands you define it as), knock yourself out. If you don't....don't! With girls, what you "should" wear seems to be a little predefined, but no one's making you wear anything (well, they are making you wear something, lol). And as far as "fitting in" there are plenty of people who defy the social norms (i.e. McGill residents and many others) and pretty much all types are represented...In regards to the frats, most of the guys who rush seem to be the well dressed type, but I think that's kind of a "chicken and egg" issue...I think the main qualification is the desire to have fun and a decent personality.

And I just wanna throw this in...of the hundres of people I have met since I arrived, I have met one who was not happy here, and it had nothing to do with the student body, she was just really homesick...

This is officially the FUNNIEST thread on earth!! lol My personal favorite was when jax asked..."Is this for real" HAHA... Thank 2 the vandies for the laugh

Gives you a whole different way to think about Vandie, doesn't it?

why is this thread still alive?
