Dressing Young (Part 1)

Knit pants with a degree of elasticity in the waist are perfect for those of us with slim hips but larger waists.

You ladies with big hips and small waists can wear the stiff pants.

We just have to watch for VPL (visible panty lines) with the knit pants.

I guess I have a thing against the knit/velour track suits because the fit of the pants
the problem is, they rarely do fit. Many are sold only in S, M, or L as if there are only three sizes of women. So often, the pants are too tight, or too baggy, neither of which is flattering. I guess a person is lucky if she is a “perfect” size S, M or L.

i am just trying to find sweatsuits that arent too baggy, or pilly or make me feel like I am one of those " ladies who lunch"
Is it to much to ask to be warm * and * fit?

Emeraldkity—have you tried REI? They have plenty of slick looking work out gear that’s warm.

I gave up a few years ago. I have long legs but am slim, so I’ve never found any kind of sweat pants to fit. My D buys men’s, but she and her friends go for the “baggy” look (which again, you can get by with if you’re 16 and beautiful.)

Have you tried Target? In the ‘jammies’ section they have a whole selection of fleece pants – I bought some in pink (7 year old advice me not to wear in public: “they look like your pajamas!”) but they have some in black that could be worn in the daytime. Emeraldkitty & missypie – I have the same thing, long legs for my height. These pants (which come in XS-XL) just fit, length-wise.

missypie, the trick to avoid VPL is to wear boyshort style panties, not thongs, as many people erroneously think (I learned that from Stacey London on Oprah).

I don’t get it. If the guys think it looks good, why are we objecting?

I hope you’re saying that in jest.

IMO, the best looking workout clothes (yoga pants/tops/jackets) are from this retailer: [lululemon athletica, yoga-inspired athletic apparel](http://www.lululemon.com/). My D taught pilates when she got out of college and was looking for a job; she was the one who told me about lululemon–all of the instructors in her studio got their work clothes here.

Ladies, I just have to report back that today I walked into a salon for twenty somethings to buy product and one of the hip stylists told me she had been admiring “my look” as I walked past. I nearly fainted. But it was one of the things I started the thread asking about–skinny jeans tucked into boots with a top bought at Forever 21! I guess we really are allowed!

Not really. My husband likes long hair. I have no objection so I keep it. I don’t like mustaches and so he does that for me. I don’t see the problem.

I grew my hair long because I know dh likes it better. I do this from time to time, then I get sick of it and chop it off! However it’s not down to my butt. :)

I hate baggy sweatpants, especially those with the elastic on the bottom, cause they bring attention to my big feet and are not at all flattering in general.
I like black yoga pants. Slim up top with a flare on the bottom. TJMax usually sells them long enough for me but I can also get them online
like at amazon.
Re sneaks
I do a lot of walking but I hate white sneaks. So I get “trekkers”
sort of a cross between boots and sneaks
in gray or other colors. They look SOOO much better than white sneaks. No laces either, just those pull strings.
Re hair
I’ve been trying to let my hair go six weeks between colors. Egads
tomorrow is the day and I REALLY need it. Gave up long hair years ago
I think it ages older women. And went lighter than my native color too
otherwise I look washed out. Big change though from when I was in my 30s wearing long, almost black hair.
I really want new clothes
but am avoiding buying them. I can make my old ones last. Would rather save up for travel!

Bean’s Perfect Fit Pants tend to look good on me. They acommodate my larger waist but cling to my slim hips
AND they come in a petite length that works for me without alterations.

Most pants that would fit my waist are ridiculous clown pants on my hips and thighs, which are muscular and fit.

I know that Toneranger has repeatedly stated that she would rather open a vein than wear an elastic waist pant, but get over it! We are not all built the same!!

The idea here, I think, is to celebrate our own (youthful) beauty! I can’t handle elastic waists because of how I am built. I don’t find it hard to believe that others are built “to different drummer.” (a stretch–haha–I know)

Nonetheless, I am enjoying the repartee, and trying to realign my thinking

Woo hoo hmom5! Now stylists are very particular about their looks (on of my gfs is one – it’s all about the beauty, sharp clothes, etc
they are selling their look to the customers in a way). So that’s quite a tribute! :-)

PS toneranger–do those ‘trekkers’ have good arch support? I’d really like to find something other than my running shoes/Dansko clogs & those sound really cute.

Dansko clogs----those may be my downfall.

If I could find something that had a similar heel (no need to hem my pants!!!) as much comfort (no parenthetical required) and had more oomph factor
I’d be there all the way.

Any suggestions?

jolynne:
I go with Lands end in the summer and have a pair of Merrells (more expensive!) in the winter. I don’t usually buy from Land’s end but these are very cool and airy for the summer.
[Women’s Trekker Shoes from Lands’ End](http://www.landsend.com/pp/TrekkerShoes-74284_191688_253.html?CM_MERCH=PGGT_1_from_0000037539_to_0000037540)
Arch support is just OK but you could add an insert. The purple ones are on sale!
Consolation
we all have to adjust to our imperfect bodies. i have impossibly long legs. And big feet. So I am limited in what I can wear too. Right now, stretchy tops are not part of what I have to wear
but that may change some day.

I am in transition ( I hope)
I have recently lost 20 lb. Not sure how much more I want to loose, but I trust I will know when I get close. Dressing in the meantime is a bit of a challenge.

Will stay tuned! Keep the repartee coming!
