Dressing Young (Part 1)

Bunsen Burner - happy for the link. DD is about 5’2" and she has a tough time finding jeans. She usually buys a petite style from Express, but actually they are a little too short if she wears heals. When she buys a regular style and we get them hemmed, I just don’t think the flare looks right. We will do a shopping run over Thanksgiving and she will think I am wonderful.

Regarding husbands, mine rarely, rarely comments on my hair, clothes etc. But in our twenty some years of marriage he has once or twice made a negative comment about something (like my new purse two days ago). I generally heed his “advice.” I guess it depends on your husband and how you feel about his sensibilities. My husband has a slight vain streak, and dresses well (buys his own clothes) but just as he has made a comment or two, I have a couple things he’s purchased that I just don’t think look great on him and I have also said what I thought. He’s made comments occasionally about other females and he’s generally spot on and I agree so that has also garnered some sense of trust in his opinion on womens clothing.

I really lucked out with my H. At first, he was kind of clueless about women’s clothing but always knew what he liked in an intuitive way. He really likes it when I dress well and will always comment. He will even accompany me shopping! Not that I do much of that, don’t want to push it and anyway, I don’t shop that much.

One thing I’ve noticed about his take on “dressing young” is that he could care less about trendiness but will always notice a good fit. Basically, he cares more about the body than the clothes.

My H never pays me compliments. I’ve never heard my FIL compliment my MIL for anything. Tell you daughters to pay attention to this when they are around her boyfriend’s parents.

bookiemom - I am really annoyed at your husband!

mousegrey, the coat rocks, I’d keep it!

Bookiemom–I think your oufits sound cute & your husband will adjust in time. It’s like when someone loses weight & everyone says, “you look so thin & drawn!” Then, they all adjust and the person looks fine them them after a while. He’ll get used to the hot look. :-)

20 years ago, I changed my haircut: bangs. I had a toddler. Maybe I didn’t “style” my hair all that often, though I’d wash, blow dry, etc. every day. Then one night a month later, we were getting dressed to go out. I was in a new dress. My H looked at me, looked at my hair and said…

“Are you doing that on purpose?”

Fortunately for him, I laughed. He really is clueless.

HAH! Puzzled88, I am really annoyed at my H too–frequently!

Today I went out for lunch with my H, wearing my skinny black jeans tucked into short, black suede boots with buckle detail, long black sweater with ruffled-edge trim, bright purply-pink scoop-neck top, new bold necklace with dangly charms, and black and bright pink long scarf! I felt great! No bad comments, fine Oktoberfest lunch. H wearing flannel shirt and jeans as usual. Some of us move with the times…some others, not so much. (At least he invited me out for lunch!)

Maybe we should ask for a Parents Cafe Fashion sub-forum?

Hey, just catching up with this thread and I love some of the jean links. David Kahn and KUT look terrific. I’m heading out to my local Nordstrom’s rack tomorrow. I’m amazed by the KUTS coming in a standard 34 inch inseam. Wow, that’s my exact measurement.
long legs are just as hard to shop for as short legs. Maybe harder, since the hems can be stingy so sometimes there is no option to get them to fit.

Also, love the coat…get it back from your d!

Love this thread too. Only problem is that I’m trying to budget and this makes me want to shop!

Bookiemom- maybe he doesn’t like cropped or capri pants. My H who rarely comments on what I wear will often make some sort of joke when I wear cropped or capri pants.
I wish my Nordstrom Rack was not a 45 minute drive each direction.

bookiemom - I can only conclude that you look so very fabulous that your husband is afraid someone will try to steal you away.

Oh, and I just got back from Nordstrom where I tried on Kut jeans and cords. They were really long on me and I never have to hem other jeans. Toneranger, you’re in luck.

Puzzled, if the jeans are not on sale, Nordstrom will hem them at no charge.

I envy the shoppers. I put on five lbs & have vowed not to jean shop till I lose 7. It’s just much more pleasant that way. Kut jeans sound great! I’ve had good luck w/Guess jeans at Loeman’s (1/2 price) – they are cut very long.

Thank you Zip, I didn’t buy any because I don’t “need” any jeans. I was trying them on in in the interest of science, or rather as a public service for this thread.

That actually brings me to a question: how many pairs of jeans does a person really need? I used to have tons of them but since I, like bookie, have lost some weight recently, I’ve had to buy all new clothes. Right now I have long jeans, jeans for flats, grayish jeans and trouser jeans - just four pairs altogether. That seems like very few and yet also like plenty. How many pairs do you have?

I’m like you puzzled. I have two pairs of jeans that I like a LOT and wear a LOT. I have two that I don’t really like. Should probably give them away. I have more black pants…wide leg, narrow leg, dressy, casual…you name it. And a few khakis and stone (lighter) pants.
And quite a few capris. My H calls them my 'Nadal" pants for the tennis players out there…
And then lots of “active” pants including stretch capris and yoga pants and bike pants.
I think I have enough…but I think I’ll check out those nice long Kuts to replace one of my jeans.

How many pairs of jeans? Well, it doesn’t matter because I only wear two of them! My skinny ones that I tuck into boots and my wide leg ones (my new favorite to replace last year’s bootleg standbys). This tends to be true of all my clothes–I probably wear 5% of what I own. I think this means that I’m not a very good shopper. I’m always seduced by tricky details and colors and then get home and realize that it’s not an every day type of thing.

That’s why I had the identity crisis with the coat and ended up giving it to my D. It IS a great looking coat (and is much cheaper at overstock than at Loehmann’s where I’d bought it). I don’t know if those of you who liked it can tell but in the dark olive green one (sort of more brown than green), the buttons are sewn with orange thread and the lining is bright orange! I loved it but couldn’t get over feeling a teeny bit insecure. Silly I know.

I have 5 pairs of jeans, but only 3 fit me at the moment. Since I’m free to wear jeans to work any day I want, I might need to get another pair. When I go shopping for a particular item, in addition to the potential “targets”, I always grab a few pieces that look like some of my existing clothes and take them with me to the dressing room. This way, I can see how the new piece fits into my existing wardrobe. When I shop at Nordy’s Rack, I try on whatever falls on me from the racks. Costco is another story. I grab whatever looks good, bring it home, and return the pieces that do not fit. BTW, our local Costco had Calvin Klein peacoats that looked exactly like this for (yikes!) $60:

[Calvin Klein Wrap Topper](+Coats&origin=searchresults]Calvin”>http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3068238?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=guidednav&keyword=calvin+klein+in+Women’s+Apparel+>+Coats&origin=searchresults)

Both young ladies got one. The older kid had first dibs and picked the brown one. The younger one has to settle for gray.

Cute coat, Bunsen! I like when you can pull the waist as tight as you want to fit. Otherwise, it bunches up the coat if it’s buttoned & you try to tighten it.

Did a jean check. I have three pairs of slightly worn old navy jeans (flirt with flare); one pair of grey and one pair of blue, trouser-like jeans from Ann Taylor; and a black pair from White House/Black Market.

I would like to get a pair of skinny jeans, but so far I don’t like them with my shoes. I live in a shoe-like clog from Dansko that looks like boots with my jeans.
