Dressing Young (Part 1)

I love the dress. That looks like something I might have in my closet! And EK - some of us who were not blessed with your qualities, MIGHT go braless.

Do any of you watch Project Runway? I know it’s a ghastly criticism if one of the judges brands a designer’s dress “wearable” but I’ve noticed that some of the outfits the judges love simply could not be worn with undergarments of any kind (very clingy knits, openings in odd places). I guess if one wears high fashion, one learns all kind of little tricks.

That is a beautiful dress, BB. Very simple, but elegant. I can see myself wearing it. The cut is very flattering and forgiving :)

THere are backless bras you can wear with these type of dresses.

Love the dress BB, so chic and will go anywhere.

As for the bras, check out Nu Bras. Not only backless and strapless, but give cleavage I never thought possible!

Thank you all! I think I’m going to go with the dress. The eastsiders picked the Rack clean -I guess even Microsoft has been hit hard by the recession. But I found a pair of really cool skinny pants (someone, please hit me on the head so I’ll stop buying skinny pants!).

Hmom, I do have a NuBra, and I agree - it is amazing what it can do without a single strap! D already burned through several of NuBras - she never misses a party that requires dressing fancy.

BunsenBurner, that is a great dress. Too bad my annual black tie event was last week

Speaking of fancy events, what do you wear on top of the LBD?

Great dress!
I wish I could wear something like this. I got lots of sun damage on my back so I avoid backless clothes and I’m also self conscious in bathing suits. Blah. I can get it fixed with a laser but it would be super expensive.
I have a Nordtroms rack really close
all these postings makes me want to get there this week. Weekends are a ZOO
lines snaking around the store. They usually only have two cashiers
lol.

mousegray, if the weather is not obscenely cold or I don’t have far to walk if it is, then I wear a nice shawl/wrap.

mousegray–I wear a wrap that starts out as a scarf when go where we are headed. Then when I check my coat, I turn it ito a wrap.

I see I need to invest in some fancy wraps.

Actually, I got the one I use most from Target!

I picked up a few nice ones at Lord & Taylor’s accessories section (discount!).

I like the ones that aren’t too ‘much.’

The wraps I use cost $5 from street vendors in NYC. They sell pashminas in every color. I do the same as Jolynne, use them both as scarves and wraps.

I’m going to check those out next time I’m in NYC!

In about 1 month or so will be going to husband’s corporate holiday party. Wondering if a red plaid, strapless, straight cut dress (above the knee, fitted) with narrow velvet edging would be too young
I would wear a wrap (since I’m always cold).

I picked this up at a teen consignment store, hence the hesitation, LOL.

Have you been to this company’s holiday parties before? If it is the first time for you, I’d ask H to look for pictures from previous holiday parties on the company’s network, so you can get an idea what people typically wear to such parties.

From what you’ve described, the dress sounds fine to me (plaid is supposed to be “in”), however, I’d pair it with a bolero.

I’ve been to the parties before – attire is all over the place, tho most of the ‘corporate wives’ are a little more sedate (most are younger than me, tho).

Great idea about the bolero! If I decide not go w/this, it won’t be a big deal — just paid $14!

Did you wear the black, ‘decorative neckline’ dress this past wkend, BB?

Oh, Jolynne, sounds really nice!

I was looking at the TSV on QVC and I considered buying the coat just to have for the occasional dressy affair. Not very expensive and I thought it would look nice with one of my usual black outfits - dress or slacks. I love shawls, but I am such a klutz. You may think this is crazy, but ever since I broke my leg, I like to have my hands free. Even tho I have full use of my leg, I still find there is some kind of disconnect when I am walking in unfamiliar places, I am just not totally sure of my footing. So, I would love to have a different kind of evening coat.

Jolynne, I will wear it (hopefully) next week. The weekend was spent pulling weeds, running, and shopping at a different Rack (there are three of them in my neck of the woods). I did not find any dresses, but I blew some $$ on a pair of leather pants - LOL. I thought H would kill me. H took a look and said, “Cute. Thank goodness you did not buy a BIKE!”

Sounds like your dress should be fine. I once wore a teen dress (bought at the Cube at the Bon for less than $50 :)) to a black tie event. I got a lot of compliments, and no one else in the room had the same dress! My H’s boss’ wife bought a very fancy dress at Nordstrom only to discover that it was replicated on another lady - you should have seen their faces when they noticed each other!

Thanks, worknprogress! I know what you mean about wanting to keep your hands free. There’s a certain stability to that. That’s one reason I don’t care for ‘evening clutch bags’ - they require holding, plus I misplace them.

Bunsen–cool about the leather pants! Nice reaction from the hub. I bet they would look great at holiday parties with a soft sweater & some funky jewelry.

Neat about the black-tie event. A few years ago at hub’s corporate party (at an even more upscale locale than this year’s) I wore a velvet, spaghetti-strap dress I picked up on clearance ($19) a teen shop at the mall. Threw on some fake jewels from Claire’s (pre-teen store!) and ended up with lots of compliments. That stuff is just funny to me. It’s a victory if I can pull off something cheap that blends in w/the upscale. I try not to tell hub the price (pains him to hear I’ve been bargaining for some reason
yard sale products are just torture — sometimes I tell him I picked stuff up at a boutique for lotsa $, just so he won’t grimace at my ‘finds’).

^^^lol, my hub loves to hear about great bargains.
wow
you all are glamorous bunch! I don’t go to fancy events very often
fine with me cause it puts me in panic about what to wear. And I would just HAVE to lose those ten pounds.
jolynne
the dress sounds cute. You’ll have some jealous wives there for sure
but nothing wrong with that. Go for it.

Thanks, toneranger. Um
not going for the ‘jealous wives’ thing-y though (not saying you were implying that!). Actually, my biggest hesitation is that dress might be too revealing/too much. Want wives on my side, LOL. :-)
