Dressing Young (Part 1)

I had given up on fashion mags, but I really like More magazine which is specifically for the over 40 set. The fashion trends are there, but they do a pretty good of making you understand how to wear a trend without looking like you are a wanna be teen. I’ve noticed that I abhore the jeans with the bottom rolled up cuffs. They do not look good on anyone young or mature. Yuck that’s a look that will be here and gone before the blink of an eye.

Fashion magazines? Hopeless. I find “looks” that I like in the Eddie Bauer catalog. :o

Bromfield, did you find boots? I was going to suggest the desperation shopping move advocated in my burb: If you REALLY need something specific, something JUST RIGHT, and you are kind of in a hurry, go to Nordstroms and ask for help. It probably won’t be cheap but they will figure it out for you. (I am a Marshall’s TJMaxx person but I do love Nordstroms, especially during sales.)

I personally love Columbia boots - they are so cozy - but I don’t know if they make any that are cute enough for outside-the-U.S. Whenever I am overseas, I think “Don’t their feet get tired in those cute shoes?”

(OK, I checked - Zappos shows there is one “cute” style of Columbias. Cozy and fairly stylish. Too tall, though, maybe.)

I liked More for awhile but I thought it got boring. I like Lucky (pick and choose- some of it is pretty NOT for us) and InStyle.

I like the boyfriend jeans with the rolled up cuffs. Just need the right shoes with them and they are cute. It is definitely a trend and not one to invest much $$ in, though.

I like InStyle too. They have a section where they take a new look, and show how to make it work for 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and the oh so important 50’s!

My fashion magazines are the mailers I get from Nordstrom (or their website). Then I try to replicate the looks I like with the stuff I find at the Rack or TJMaxx.

MidwestMom, I like those boots, too!

I like *Lucky Magazine/i . I used to get InStyle also, but it seemed a little too red carpet/celebrity focused, imo. Anyway, I’ve subscribed to Lucky for several years now - and find that it spans ages - from my age to my girls. I like that the clothes come in a range of prices and that tips are given on how to wear certain items. Everyday people - non celebrity - find a place in each issue. Another plus: the magazine is relatively inexpensive. No articles - just clothes and makeup.

This thread is a riot…I stayed away but today (in a fit of boredom) decided to read some of it.

Re: Chicos…I HATE their Travelers line…don’t like the “elastic waist” pants and skirts at all. BUT I have a closet with a bunch of Chicos slacks and even a couple of pairs of jeans…NO ELASTIC WAIST. They fit great and I love them. I have a bunch of jackets also…NONE is a floral print…not one.

Ditto Coldwater Creek.

Marshalls and Target are a good source for nice clothes.

Leggings? You’ve got to be kidding! I hated them the FIRST time around…can’t imagine getting them now.

Dress like my daughter?? You’ve got to be joking. I could wear her cloths as we are the same size, but give me a break. The “cut” just isn’t right and to be honest, I do not WANT to dress like a 21 year old at all.

Shoes…comfort AND style. If the shoes don’t have both, I don’t buy them.

I’m much more concerned with my purses than I used to be. I need the right size, color and such. Right now, I’m into Brighton brown/black purses. LOVE them…but oh my they are pricey. BUT it’s a treat.

My family and friends refer to me as the queen of bargain shopping. I live near a VERY good consignment shop…and believe me I go there first. The folks making the donations don’t keep their clothes for six months. It’s a goldmine of current styles at very reasonable prices.

Staple of my wardrobe…black slacks. I think I have ten pairs of them.

Missypie- I wore my Kut jeans to a party and I am going to wear them tonight out to dinner with a group of friends. I think they are younger feeling but not so young that our kids would wear them. I also got mine at Nordstrom’s Rack. I would not have tried them on had I not read about them on CC. I had mine hemmed and I have worn them with a pair of high Cole Haan clogs I bought at Nordstroms at the last sale. (The hemming cost more than the jeans!)
Just had my hair cut and colored this week. Read both InStyle and Lucky while I was sitting under the dryer setting the hair dye. I enjoyed both. My oldest D loves them both but finds she can’t bear to read them anymore since she is on a totally strict budget that does not allow for any shopping. The stylists at my salon are all under 30. They dress very trendy. Lots of tight jeans and high heeled shoes and jeans tucked into boots. One of them told my they find lots of their outfits at Forever 21. Trendy but cheap.

No magazines, I watch my DD the fashion maven and then try to adjust for age. She thinks I’m overly conservative. Thinks I should buy everything a size smaller.

My housecleaning helper (beautiful, stylish 18-year-old) also thinks I should buy everything a size smaller. She is very tiny on top and wears everything very fitted–size XS or 2. She thinks my jeans are too big if there is any leeway in the seat at all.

Do you others moms wear your jeans “tight in the seat”? I can’t stand that. I think it looks trashy and it’s uncomfortable too. I have a very hard time finding jeans that are big enough in the seat but not too big anywhere else. I really don’t like that trend in pants fashion these days.

I hate baggy jeans. BUT I also hate tight fitting jeans. The newer jeans fabrics with about 5% spandex are a great compromise. The jeans are sung enough…but have enough “give” in them to feel comfy and not look saggy baggy.

My problem is that I don’t like low cut slacks. My daughter says the waist on my slacks (which is below my waist) is still to high. Heck…I never tuck a shirt in, so how would anyone know or care about the height of my slacks.

Bookiemom, you made me try on jeans with two mirrors–never thought about too tight in back! How tight the young girls where jeans is pretty crazy to me, they look so uncomfortable. The current styles, IMO, only look good on a few shapes, all very small. Why do girls buy into this stuff?

Gee thumper, I could say the same thing about elastic waist pants. You certainly don’t tuck your shirt in them - so how can anyone see if it’s elastic?

OK - I bought a pair of Kut jeans. Perfect length for me. And slimming. But honestly I don’t like them much. They have a bit of stretch in them and I guess I prefer the non-stretch types. They keep…I don’t know…riding down in the back? Hard to describe…anyway…I’ll keep them but not as primary jeans.
I like lower cut jeans and I like to wear them with belts. The best look for me is to wear a longish cardigan sweater or jacket, or even vest, open in the front. That way, I can hide my backside but still feel youngish in my low cut jeans…lol.
Saw a young family member today, who was wearing jeans that could be mistaken for leggings. She looked great. But she’s also a stick. Most of us older gals can’t get away with that look…especially from the back. And oh that back is VERY important.

One of my young (25) running friends showed up at race packet pickup today in a denim mini skirt that truly barely covered her crotch. She is thin and adorable, but I absolutely can not imagine how she can sit down in that thing. Amazing! I will NOT be copying that look.

Folks: gravity happens. In my case, gravity has been working on this poor bod for over half a century. There is a reason I should not be wearing the same clothes my 20-something employees are wearing. Nor should my jeans be quite as tight.

edit: whoops! there was another page! so this will look like a non sequitur. But I stand by the sentiment.

Attention CC shoppers - if you are looking for a real pashmina, check your Costco. Our Costco had lightweight, 100% cashmere pashminas (very similar to the ones sold at Nordstrom for $80) for $50 apiece. Guess what our Ds are getting for Christmas?

BB, my parents bought my D the Calvin Klein pea coat you got your D’s, she loves it! I’ll tell them about the pashmina. Keep the good deals coming please!

Help!

I am looking for dressy black slender/straight-leg pants to wear with glitzy shoes and a silver dupioni silk jacket.

I can find skinny pants, which make me look like tweedle dee even though I’ve become somewhat svelte of late, and much wider legged pants. (I think to pull of the really skinny pants you can have not a single ounce of fat on the thigh or tummy)

Any ideas?

LOL, the ad at the top of my screen is now for butt lift jeans!
