Dressing Young (Part 1)

Oh - and on a dressing young note - it is a little too soon to start shopping, but older DD is now engaged and planning a wedding for summer of 2011. Year younger DD graduates from college. I will be consulting with all of you when I start looking for a dress.

Ooooo, a wedding! Congratulations, WNP!!

I’m another “shorty” who would dearly love to be tall. I so admire a tall person! I tried to go to the Halloween parade this year but it was a lost cause. Couldn’t see a thing. If I were 6 feet tall, I’d definitely wear heels. Also, I admire men who have taller wives.

Congrats! Just don’t don’t don’t buy one of those *lace sacks *they pass off as mother of the bride dresses
utterly unflattering on any figure.

Our daughter’s wedding was June 2008 and MOG (mother of groom) and I got awesome, fun dresses at David’s Bridal. They were astoundingly cheap, too. I have posted this before, but when we went to David’s to shop (Thanksgiving before the wedding), my daughter pointed at the lacy, boring 2 piece MOB dress displayed and said to the salesperson “See that. That is NOT what we are looking for!” We wound up with dresses from the bridesmaids’ selection which were halter-style (but good coverage) and very flattering. The dresses were not identical, but similar. Different colors, of course.

We found a great (not too foofy) prom dress at David’s Bridal one year and I remember thinking what a great store David’s Bridal is; flattering dresses, reasonable prices.

OK, new subject: Bathing suits for a woman of a certain age.

Comments? Observations?

OK, I’ve taken to wearing tankini tops and “boy shorts”. I used to wear the little skirts but thought they looked matronly. I get razor burn and HATE waxing so I don’t like the regular cuts on suits.

^^^I don’t like to wear bathing suits at all because of that – ummmmmm – “bikini line” issue.

I like the tankini tops with the skirts. I agree, the skirts CAN look matronly, I stick with ones that are pretty straight/sporty instead of the ones that are sort of “flowy”. I feel VERY self conscious in regular cut bathing suits these days
that’s probably a topic for the “hang-ups” thread

I get two different types of suits - the ones with running-short or skirt type bottoms and tankini tops (Lands’ End had a huge selection) for public stuff like rafting, water parks, etc. - then more “regular” cut ones for around our own pool.
I agree that the straight cut skirted bottoms look much better than the old style “Mom” suits.
One issue I have it getting the tankini tops long enough. My short sister has 2" of overlap in a suit where I have 2" of gap.
At beaches or other non-pool spots I have been known to wear a dark colored sports bra and either the swim bottoms or running shorts.

toneranger, I bought a Juicy Couture swimsuit with a little skirt that strategically covers certain skin defects  There is definitely nothing matronly about a Juicy Couture item of clothing! It does a great job holding my sizeable ‘endowment’ in place (finding a suit that offers enough support in this area is always a challenge to me). Another great thing about this suit is that the ruching on the front masks my belly imperfections. The sales person who sold me the suit said she sold a bunch of them to women of our age group!

For the straight skirt suit, here is a couple of styles that I like:

For swimming laps, I wear D’s old polyester speedo suit. It is ugly, ratty looking, out of date, but has no holes and does the job.

Okay - no D cup needed here, so I like this one:

Consolation - try Old Navy jeans - Flirt or Diva cut, darker wash or black, boot cut – fit well for the “waistless”. Less than $25

For me, it depends on who’s going to see you. By your own pool with just the family? A bikini is fine. In public, It’s been my feeling that at 50 plus, I should stick to one piece suits.

I do need a D cup but i am not going to wear a black bathing suit, black is not a geat color for me. I like JCrew suits. They are mostly seperates but come in lots of colors , wear very well and since they are seperates , I can get the bottom I like, with the support I want.

Not really made for laps though.

( also agree with old navy jeans. Those cuts fit very well plus nice dark denim.)

Hey guys
you got me thinking. Going to a warm place later this week and my tankini tops are a bit worn. So I got this one (really cheap) on Amazon to go with my black (with white trim) boy short bottoms. Hope if fits!

Have fun, toneranger! Cute top - it looks like you lucked out, Amazon says “currently unavailable” :)

probably because the rest went to other CCers of a certain age.

No, I think it got the last one
and it was my size
how weird is THAT? And marked down from $70 to $16. It’s my lucky day. Still
you never know until you open it up. Anyway, there are some similar options at that price point. And if you have prime, it’s free two day shipping!
