Dressing Young (Part 1)

emeraldkity4 -

I am going to check out the Lucy line. I like the looks of the Perfect Core Pant.

Concerning pearls - Shreve, Crump and Low in Boston restrings pearls. They are the oldest jeweler in the U.S. and very reputable. I had mine restrung there years ago after my oldest son - then a toddler - yanked them off my neck.

I rarely wear my pearl jewelry anymore - the necklaces have gold clasps and the ring is set in gold. Nowadays, I wear platinum wedding rings and a stainless watch most of the time, and I don’t like to mix metals. Does anyone else have a problem with “mixing metals?”

We will be the best dressed latte group around, when we meet up after our workouts. And wear pearls carry the best bags too! ;)

BTW. (relates to my prev. post about bags). I told my H that I almost bought an $80 bag from TJMaxx
he made me go back and get it. So, now I have a cool green bag and can belong to the club. (“Tiganello”?? Does that count?)

Bookiemom, check out Title 9 or Athleta
nice high quality and everything holds up well and fits well plus they have a good range of sizes. Look at the sale “stuff” on the website for bargains. I googled Lululemon and saw “Cheer Gear” stuff and pictures of pants that were way low with a too short distance between the waistband and the crotch and quickly closed as I immediately though “junior stuff.” Athleta is part of the Gap/Banana Republic, etc. family. I personally like Title 9 better, but both have high quality.

Mixing metals. I still mix metals. I have a custom designed wedding ring that was gold and it’s unusuall enough that I hate to take it off simply because it’s gold. My watch is gold and silver so after that I just started “mixing.” At first it bothered me, but I’m getting used to it. Fortunately my hair covers the clasp on my pearls so the pearls are pretty neutral.

^^^GASP!!! Mixing metals?? Where I come from, it’s a no-no, but your engagement and wedding rings are not counted in that; they’re neutral. Gold earrings demand a gold bracelet or necklace; silver, the same thing. Mixing is not allowed.

But yes, pearls are neutral.

The clasp on pearls does not count, IMO. The clasps on many fine gem and most pearl necklaces will be yellow gold. Keep them at the back of your neck and don’t worry about it!

I always wonder where the You Can’t Do That committee sits:). We have fewer members in Northern California
If you mix metals with an aesthetic you carry with a strong hand, well, you can do most anything. Haphazard, harder to carry off.

I agree, it all hinges on the 'tude! It’s gotta be “What? You crazy? Of course this all goes together.”

Hey, momofthreeboys, I already get Title 9 catalogs and just today got one from Athleta and thought their stuff looked nice.

When I was starting on losing weight, my endocrinologist URGED me to join a gym and buy really nice workout clothes. He said it is all part of the deal! He even asked me later after I had lost a significant amount of weight if I had bought the nice workout outfits!

Re mixing silver and gold jewelry. It can be done, but canamdance is right, it has to look deliberate. I used to wear only gold jewelry, but then I got into Brighton and now I wear almost all silver. I inherited my grandmother’s wedding ring, and received a new wedding ring set for my 20th anniversary, in platinum. So now I’m mostly in silver mode. I think that looks more stylish right now. I do have some Brighton pieces with both gold and silver tones. I like that look and then you can mix in silver and gold pieces.

What is this ‘Brighton’ of which you speak? I used to have a GF who anticipated each trip, I think, to Chicago to load up on this Brighton stuff. We’ve lost touch, but she did have some pretty rockin’ jewellery.

I have 2 watches, both silver and gold, so I take my cue from them that I am entitled to wear both silver or gold simultaneously if I please. But generally I chicken out and try to keep to one family. Ingrained teachings linger
no white shoes after Labour Day, no ratty underwear, what if I’m in an accident, don’t make crazy faces, your face will stay that way (or at least your wrinkles will develop that way!!).

I mix metals. Generally I prefer silver/white gold, but have a cool Pandora bracelet with a oxidized silver bracelet, gold clasp and gold charms. I wear it on the same arm as my gold watch. Other arm has silver, usually. I love jewelry.

I’ve wondered about that white shoes and Labor Day rule. My theory is that it’s a remnant of the Gilded Age, when servants had to clean said white shoes, and when the wearing of said shoes was done only in the country house, to which all decamped on Memorial Day and from which all departed on Labor Day.

Big day for me today: the tags are coming off the Kooba bag :).

I follow the white shoe rule, mostly, I suppose, because white shoes don’t look quite right before and after Labor Day. Then again, I don’t have any pure white pumps or full shoes; all of my whites are sandals, and they don’t look right during any months other than June, July and August. But, I’ve always lived in a cold climate
I would think that they are right anytime in a tropical climate and for a longer season in a warmer climate.

I think white shoes make your feet look big, or at least my feet. My 19-year-old housekeeping helper has some white wedge summer shoes with that hemp sort of heel thingie that look cute on her, but then she is 19.

BRIGHTON! This is a chain of jewelry stores all across the country, and then some stores carry some of their jewelry. They also have very nice purses (I have a lovely white one I got for one-third off on sale) and some shoes and belts. They have lots of jewelry sets that go together and other pieces can coordinate. Lots of hearts as that is their signature symbol, and now lots of peace signs worked into the designs. They now have charm bracelets and necklaces that can be fun. I made a charm necklace with a dog, a four-leaf clover, and the two state charms from the state where I live and the one where I grew up.

Each Brighton store carries a little different stock. The stores are often in airports or in tourist areas. The company seems very thoughtful. I received a personal thank-you note from my salesperson after I bought my purse, and on my birthday, the company sent me a nice little leather change purse with a heart on it with a note thanking me for being a customer. I don’t recall any company doing anything like that for me before.

The purse is lovely, by the way. Very nice quality–as nice as my Coach bag. You can look at Brighton products online, but they have to be purchased at a store.

Come from a family of jewelers. It is fashionable and acceptable to mix metals! Times have changed!

My mom wears below waist or low cut pants, bootcut, they make her look taller, and turtlenecks, they make her look skinnier. I like it, but she refuses to wear leggins, she says she wore them in 84 and they don’t look god on people of ger age anymore. I see my friends moms wearintg them and I don’t see the problem.

blankmind - high five! I became a Kooba fan ever since oldfort mentioned this brand on this forum. Which one did you get?

Kooba makes great bags - hope you enjoy yours, blankmind!

I got the Samantha. It’s the perfect shade of brown, and is a good size for me. I need a bag with room for my junk, but I am too small to pull off a large bag. I also like that it has outside pockets for my keys & phone. And after all these years, this is my first brown purse.
