Dressing Young (Part 2)

I have a few pair of denim jeans but don’t wear them much (especially outside of the house). For me they are usually casual, never worn with high heels.

I do adore my NYDJ Marilyn black petite jeans, often worn with black booties (medium heel). Had to look up what type they are, out of curiosity, since I will likely wear them til they die even if type (turns out to be Straight) becomes dated.

@Colorado_mom - I am the opposite of you. I have probably 20 pairs of denim jeans and wear them all of the time! It was strange for me during Covid and working at home everyday to always be in leggings versus jeans.

I agree that the preferred style of jeans is what fits your body type and comfort. I always disliked skinny jeans b/c I have big feet for my height (long legs/big feet) and I felt my feet were on display all the time all the time in skinnies. lol. I’m super happy that flares are back in style (& straight is not bad either). I feel like skinny jeans are too confining, now, too!

I got a fun pair of Hollister, very distressed, faded, a little loose jeans at a used clothing store. Wear them with platform boots and feel kinda trendy! Even got a comment (“I like your style”) at a store from a young person LOL.

Well, all 6 of the flared cropped jeans I tried looked horrible on me. It didn’t water the length, leg style or rise. Although I don’t have short legs, I have a long torso, so in proportion they can appear a bit shorter depending on what I wear. Those flares just made my legs look awful and super short.

I’m trying to find a cropped pair, though, so decided to try a straight leg. I think if the color blends in with footwear or is just straight, it just makes the leg look not short, or like I’m wearing flood pants.

I found these at Kohls today. They are so cute on and the hem is raw. I can cuff them to the length I want. I’ve actually been looking fir cropped to go with a pair of silver booties I have where they go up the leg a little. I wanted more of the bootie to show, and these did the trick. They are so comfortable too, higher waisted but not ultra high.

@conmama - those jeans look really cute. I have a pair of Paige jeans that are very similar in the same light wash that I wear all the time.

I will wear what’s comfy. I would look ludicrous in flared jeans at my age. I did notice them in Paris and Rome.

The best pair of jeans I ever owned was a pair of Sportmax Code skinny jeans. For a while, the brand stopped making them, but it looks like they are back as Sportmax Perfect Fit. Waiting for sales… and scouting discounters like Yoox etc.

Another sort of “fashion” question. Tight leggings have been “in” for years. Now I’m seeing straight leg, and even “bell bottom” (whatever they would call them these days). But, I still see the young girls wearing the tight ones all over.
Thoughts on what’s in/what’s out? Or heading which way…
I think I just donated by not tight legging kinds of things within the last couple of years, so figured they’re making a comeback.

My D’s both wear the flare leggings from Aerie. They are super cute. I think the tight/straight leg ones are still in, too.

My teenage and early 20s daughters wear flare leggings - probably the same Aerie pair mentioned above altho my teenager just bought a really cute flare pair from Athleta a week ago. Flare pants/leggings can be slimming for someone who does not have skinny thighs.

I wear the Zella flare leggings from Nordstrom which I think fit well and don’t look too young and trendy for me.

conmama - I find straight leg flattering and those jeans are really cute! My favorte black office pants are straight and they seem classic and work with all.

To add: my daughter is a fan of the flared leggins from Aerie too (they have like a ‘v’ on the waistband). They look super-flattering to me. I always felt skinny leggings were so revealing of every angle and aspect (unless super compression which I am less willing to tolerate anymore LOL). I got a similar flare pair (but warmer material) from Hollister. I sized up and they are comfy and still look pretty good…

My first pair of Lululemon “athleisure” pants have a flare leg - they are pretty old, like from back when the store first opened here more than ten years ago. Even when the flare leg went out, they were so expensive I never got rid of them. Good thing I guess, now back in style!

My husband bought me a gorgeous black lambs wool coat with a fur collar and cuffs. It’s an A-line silhouette and very flattering fit, 3 buttons total. He purchased probably 15-20 years ago. It is full length and goes almost to my ankles and I’m 5’8”

I’ve worn it maybe 6 times, to company Xmas parties. But it’s been awhile as the length is even overwhelming on me and it’s just not the style anymore. He mentioned once how I never wear it and I just said it’s so fancy for everyday wear. I think his feelings were a little hurt.

I’ve decided to finally get it hemmed. I don’t know why it’s taken me that long. My question how long? Do you think right above the knee, right at the knee, or below. My thinking was the shorter, the more casual and I might wear it more often. Longer would look more elegant, I think. What do you think?

Whatever you do, ask that the fabric that is trimmed be kept—it would be good to make something nice and warm—maybe a muff or hat or something.

Sorry, no coat expertise here but it sounds lovely.

Definitely agree to tailor it so you can wear it more! I personally don’t like anything to fall right at the knee. You might think about what you would wear it with - if it’s pants above or below the knee would both work. If with a dress or skirt , would you want the dress/skirt completely covered?

I Never wear skirts at or below my knee. I’d probably be wearing it mostly with pants. I agree with you, it’s been sitting in my closet for close to 20 years…might as well start wearing it on a more regular basis!

I would alter it to fall below the knee. That way, if you don’t like the new length, it can be shortened again. Sounds like a great coat. What a thoughtful husband.

Thanks! I’m taking it tomorrow to my tailor and we’ll talk about it.

I’d bet the tailor has good ideas. What a very generous and thoughtful husband. I’m sure he’ll be delighted to see you wear his gift more often, especially since it looks good on you.
