Dressing Young (Part 2)

Hoggirl- how did the wedding/wedding dress work out??

The dress fits great! The wedding isnā€™t until Memorial Day weekend. The earrings and wristlet I ordered are scheduled to arrive today. I will report back! Thanks for asking

The Anthropologie dresses were delivered over the weekend and I had a chance to try them on.

Hereā€™s the dress

https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/robin-tiered-mini-dress?color=043&type=PETITE&quantity=1&size=M%20Petite

Sizes are really limited. I bought this dress in XSP in the night sky and XS in the Hawaiian Blue which looks to be completely sold out.

Iā€™m 5ā€™1ā€ for reference. Both dresses fit. The regular was 1ā€ longer than the petite. The petite measured 34ā€ in the front, the regular 35ā€. Both fell about 3ā€ above my knees which is a length I like. Itā€™s longer in the back than the front, although it measures longer in the front.

The petite was about 1 1/2ā€ smaller in the bodice/waist. Just the bodice was lined but neither was see through. Itā€™s a loose fitting dress that was figure forgiving.

I really liked the sleeves, they are a nice length for my more mature looking arms while being nicely breezy.

I could have kept either one, but Iā€™m going to keep the night sky. The darker color was a little more forgiving/flattering. It also seems easier to dress up or down.

I am hoping for an occasion to wear it. I think it will be a nice dress to have in my closet for any occasion that comes up. The fact that itā€™s machine washable is a huge plus also.

Thank you for the dress report.

I ordered the Hawaiian blue in Xs regular, but it is delayed. Iā€™m 5ā€™ 1.5ā€ , so I hope it hits front just above knees. The email about the delay never gave a date.

I think the length will be great. :crossed_fingers:

It seems all the cute dresses I like are meant for 5ā€™4ā€ and shorter. I also like dresses about 3-4 inches above my knee for the most part. One of my favorite bloggers just looks darling in all her dresses, sheā€™s 5ā€™4ā€ and I can never wear them. Hi Sugarplum is her blog.

EDIT - removed links - didnā€™t work correctly. Anyway, the wristlet gold bag and earrings I purchased to wear with my green dress to the wedding at the end of the month worked great!

Hoggirl- that sounds great! A vote for wristlets for weddings/formal events. I had a tan small bag (kind of like an oversized wallet) with a thin shoulder strap at recent wedding and it was still a little clunky/much. Would rather have just committed to a dressy evening bag to hold phone, etc. Have a great time at the wedding!

I usually resort to my husbandā€™s pockets for my phone etc.

Iā€™m so glad they worked out, @Hoggirl !

Mathmom - Haha may do that next time. What do I really need at a formal event? Nothing, really.

I often do this as well, but he isnā€™t attending this (out-of-state) wedding with me.

Reporting back to say I still havenā€™t made much progress on finding a dress.

I was excited to see this one from Nordstrom came back in stock so I ordered it and finally tried it on last night. Link isnā€™t working but here is a photo.

I loved the fabric and the halter style neckline is very flattering.
Unfortunately the pleated skirt did nothing for me. I tried it on for my daughter (and friends in her chem study group she was Facetiming with :grinning:) and they agreed the skirt was too poofy. If the skirt portion was straight rather than pleated, it would have been perfect. It was hard to get the fitted waist band to hit the right spot, causing the pleats to poof out on my hips or if pulled up a little higher, the halter top was too big.

I also ordered an Eliza J white dress that when I went back and looked at it, thought it would look ridiculous on me. However, tried it on last night and it was actually really pretty. I would need to size up as the skirt was a little tight across my abdomen, altho Spanx might have fixed that. In the end, my D and I decided it was a little too ā€œwedding dressā€ ish, even though it was above the knee and flouncy, it was a little too fancy. If they had it in other colors, it might have worked.

Iā€™m waiting on four more dresses to arrive but am starting to think I might just wear pants. There are two ceremonies that day and we finally found out hers is at 9am. It can still be pretty gloomy at that hour in San Diego, and looking at long range forecast might only be in 50s-60s which means Iā€™ll be freezing in most of the dresses/sandals Iā€™ve been considering. However, I still have my high school seniorā€™s graduation Memorial Day weekend back here in MD where it might actually be much warmer so still need a dress for that.

@soozievt thanks again for all the links! I went through every single one and was able to find a few to try. One of them is still on its way and might work.

Make sure you have a sweater or a wrap whether you wear a dress or pants since our May gray here in San Diego makes for cool mornings.

4kids4us - I could be off here but based on your body type as described, what about an a-line type of fit-flare dress? Minority opinion here - I donā€™t find flouncy, frilly, floral dresses flattering (at least for me!). I like a simple line that flows and highlights the figure a bit (again - just personal preference and please feel free to disregard!)

Would something like this work?

I received my Anthropologie dress yesterday, in the Hawaiian blue. Anyone else? I ordered size 2 regular. It is a few inches above knees in front, longer in back

Do you like it? I decided at 5ā€8ā€™ or so, it was too short for me. (The one I tried on was also the yellow, which didnā€™t help). The Hawaiian blue is my favorite color for that dress.

Iā€™m deciding. Itā€™s more feminine than anything I own. Flutter sleeves. Length is perfect for me. I ran into my neighbor, an excellent dresser as she is a realtor dealing with upscale houses. She was wearing something close, from Nordstromā€™s. She looked great.

Iā€™ll try to get someone to take a picture with me in it, minus the face. I can see it being so useful in the summer and travel.

Another great buy was LL Bean pathfinder LED cap. I bought it to walk my dog at night. The light in front has 3 settings. My neighbor has one, and I bought an extra for my kids.

That LED cap sounds awesome, bookworm! I have glow-in-the-dark gloves for winter walking but needed something visible for warmer months. Just didnā€™t feel like putting on the reflective vest I have every time I step out. Love the hat idea.
