Any length preference? Personally I like to start with the shoe choice… outside may (or may not) mean you need to avoid spiky heels.
Not fit and flare, more A-line or straight and short. Not frilly. Probably solid but not averse to a print. I am a “winter” in coloring. Re shoes, I won’t wear high heels at this point in my life. Low heels are good. Definitely not spiky heels.

I can’t find the thread, but a young gal from Europe was asking for a graduation dress. Someone posted a navy sheath dress, with see thru navy hem. Very simple, classy.

Love this dress! But it will look wrong on my short body 
I happened to be looking at these beautiful options while next to spouse and showed him some of my favorites. His response: “too paisley” “too flowery” “what exactly are you trying to accomplish?” LOL, he would pick out for me the most body-con inappropriate dress. I’m not going to ask for his opinion any more.

@soozievt really like the Eliza-j-knot detail, very sophisticated and the Adrianna Papell embroidered sheath dress is beautiful. Both would be too long on my short frame. The knot one could be shortened, however.
The Sundance dresses come in petite (some of them) but mostly come in “spring” or “fall” colors.

Is this too swingy/loose? It is a petite. There were a couple other petite dresses in this brand.

@calgal I’m glad you liked two of them. Why not order them and try them out? I think the Adrianna Papell embroidered sheath one could also be shortened, and yes with the Eliza J knot one.
@calgal I just went through the “looking for dress” process myself. I got quite a bit of help here! I’m petite also, and look best with an above the knee length. I found it very helpful to read the descriptions to see what the length actually is because some that are above the knee can be too short, but by the same token, some can still be too long, esp if the model pictured is tall. I ordered one Eliza J dress that was above the knee in the photo but was mid-shin on me and I’m not even super short (I’m 5’3”).
I eventually found two dresses - one from Loft (sold as a petite so it was perfect) and another from Nordstrom Rack - a Calvin Klein that was not petite but still hit me above the knee. I wanted an A Line style and found quite a few on Nordstrom Rack.
I ended up wearing this one. It was above my knees but not as short as pictured on this model.
