Drew has sent out the first batch of acceptance letters, so it's time for a celebration! For all those who were accepted, tell us about yourself, and why you want to go to Drew.

I got my acceptance letter on friday.
they offered me 16 thousand dollars renewable.
I don’t know if I will be going there yet.

I’m asian, and I plan to major in Biochemistry. I’m not a typical asian who just happens to go for science like all the other ones, I chose to do science because I love it.

I’m still thinking about it… Drew, or Rutgers…hmmm :)

I got the Dean’s $16,000 Scholarship, too.
I’ll major in Theatre if I go.

I applied ED to Vassar, but if they turn me down, Drew will be my top choice unless I get better financial aid somewhere else. The theatre program at Drew is supposed to be incredible (beat out Yale for best theatre program last year), and Madison, NJ is such a nice area.

yeah, everyone kept telling me the location Drew is in is amazing,

I am laughing! I grew up in Madison, hating it, and fled to Maine at age 17, where I have lived ever since. Now my son is applying to Drew and hoping to get a good merit award. What does he love about Drew? The campus, the town, the proximity to NYC (where he hasn’t been since age 7) and the amazing bathrooms in the newer dorms. lol The visit day was rainy. The tour guide had wonderful energy. We had to hurry away to get to SUNY New Paltz. Drew impressed him. He wants to play soccer and major in liberal arts/poli sci. He likes theatre. Drew has it all, including extended family in NJ. I sure hope the decision is in his favor. He also likes Clark, Muhlenberg, and Union College. We shall see…

My D plans to major in classics and is a fencer. She liked Drew, on its own merits, quite a lot and loved the location. The only negative factors are that we had a truly wretched tour guide when we visited and it did make my daughter question what other students would be like. Also, she got a nice scholarship, but it’s still a lot of money. I guess we’ll wait and see the entire financial aid package. D’s top choice is Muhlenberg and she also applied to New Paltz.

Here’s some interesting stats: For the fall 2008 class, Drew got 5219 applications, accepted 3549, but enrolled only 390. That’s an 11% yield–surely one of the lowest in the country. They have to accept nearly ten times the number of students they think will actually enroll. I’m not sure what that means–I suppose a lot of people are applying to Drew as a second-choice school or backup school.

Congratulations to all of you who got accepted to Drew!

Like I have said in other posts, I am a first year student hear at Drew.

Arose4Emily: The theatre program here at Drew was just ranked #1 in the country by the Princeton Review! ;)

Xu701zero: The town of Madison is beautiful. It’s a nice short walk into town from Drew, and the train station is there too.

Merlin and zoosermom: I am a tour guide here at Drew. I am sorry to zoosermom that you and your daughter had an unpleasant tour. We as tour guides try to give you the best impression of Drew in a positive way, and I am sorry if your tour gave you a bad impression of Drew. People here at Drew are not normally like that. At Drew, I feel like I am in a huge family. As you can see, people like Merlin had wonderful tours. Please dont let your wretched tour influence your decision too much about coming to Drew. Try coming for an Ambassador Day. This will allow your daughter to spend the night with a college student in their dorm and get a real Drew experience. She will be able to eat, hang out, go to meetings, and go to classes with the student. I did it last year, and that is mainly what made me decide to come to Drew.

Tour guides really do make a difference. In truth, the reason my S even looked at Drew was because we were visiting family in NJ, he was a HS junior, and I thought he needed exposure to various D3 colleges. Of course I have not told him, but I never expected that he would like it quite so much!
Observations:

BTW, our female tour guide, in April 2009, was a freshman from one of the Oranges. Her positive energy was contagious…

In our area, prep school students often apply to Drew as a safety. I think this helps to explain the less-than-stellar enrollment rates. That said, with the addition of the new Baldwin Honors Program this year, Drew enrolled about 500 students.

My S received his acceptance pack today with $17000/yr Deans Award. As a student with a mixed cultural background and having grown up internationally, he is concerned that there will be a very limited international community. He loved the campus, and the proximity ot NY without being in the city.

We will have to see how everything works out. But its exciting!

Merlin and zoosermom - my son is a student at SUNY New Paltz. If I can help answer any questions about New Paltz for you, I’d be happy to do so.

Yay i got accepted today!
and i got 15,000 deans merit
i applied for the bio major

shortie, Congratulations! Did you apply using the priority application? Did you submit your standardized test scores?

I got my acceptance letter today with a $17,200 Dean’s Award. Is anyone definitely going to Drew?

Well, the big envelope arrived today!

Congrats to everyone who has gotten “the big envelope”!

Expatme, one of the really cool things about Drew is the level of diversity on campus. As I’ve written elsewhere on CC, my D has friends originally from Nigeria, China, India, etc. There is also a lot of emphasis placed on international experiences. As a sophomore, my D did a Drew International Seminar (DIS) in Argentina. This semester she is studying in London, and many of her friends are doing the European Semester, which is based in Brussels. Drew also has a semester at the UN, which might be of interest to your S. And, of course, it’s an easy train ride to NYC where there are all kinds of international organizations and events. So I suspect your S would probably find Drew and the area a friendly place.

Hi, We are still waiting Drew is my sons number one choice. We applied priority back in October. We were told they would not start reviewing apps. till Nov 15th for Priority. How long does it take? I hope we here soon. A couple of his friends got accepted already( this week) . he is a good student too. Is there any order that they review apps? I asssume we will hear real soon.

GlennD, my son was told that some of the counselors at Drew, but not all, review in alphabetical order. I don’t know if this is true, as he did hear this information from a student. If your son is concerned, perhaps he should contact his counselor at Drew. My son was also told that all students who applied using a priority app. will hear by Christmas, and counselors began reading apps on 11/18. I really do not think that not having heard yet has anything to do with student stats, but I really was beginning to wonder why our son had not heard. His decision arrived today, along with a nice scholarship offer.

Hi Our last name begins with a B so that throws that theory out I think we are more anxious then him. I just wish I knew a method to the madness. If you contact them they probably wont tell you anything even if it is good news. My wife told m to be patient. We applied early October, but as you said they didn’t start reviewing the apps. till Nov 18th. I guess you felt the same as us.
