Drexel - Class of 2023

Drexel appears to be one of the most over-priced schools around. My son really enjoyed his visits there but his merit award was underwhelming. Stevens gave him a much better deal and is probably a [much?] better choice academically for engineering. Drexel scholarship appeal request was responded to almost instantaneously with form letter rejection.

From the responses here, I bet that if you are on the Drexel waiting list and you want to go, don’t worry because a lot of people will be turning down their acceptances.

@hilltopwest
I agree, Drexel seems like a great school but didn’t offer as much merit as we anticipated.

My D has multiple other options that are $20k to $35k per year cheaper after merit is considered.

Glad girls are getting all the good offers!
Son is Wait listed at RPI

Thanks

Drexel is by the far the most expensive of the schools on our list and the only way we can attempt to justify the cost of Drexel is to recalculate on the 5 year plan vs 4 years and hopefully use some of the potential $ made during Co-op internships to cut down the cost of the 5th year. I do have a feeling that the costs on those partial years are going to be higher than I am anticipating.

Yes, 5 year cost will be greater than 4 year especially if student lives in dorm during co-op.

From articles I have read, Drexel is in recovery mode from past terrible admissions management and a lack of cost containment. Their admissions acceptance rate and median / average SAT/ACT are not impressive at all and it seems the things they score highest on are their online learning programs.
It is probably one of those schools that are harder to graduate from than to get in to.
I understand that most colleges in an urban setting include a cost premium and students are also paying a high premium for a mature co-op program.
In all, we really want Drexel to work out but I am concerned that in a private school of its larger size, the lack of attention to things like merit scholarship appeals is an indication that this place is just a factory where the students are on their own and the university provides little assistance or even attention to anything beyond broad based rules and policies.
Recovery mode means you have bigger problems to tend to than the problems of the few. Current students will bear the burden of bringing Drexel up in the rankings and through its recovery. My sense is students 10 years from now will be getting a lot better educational value out of Drexel than the students of today.

care to share some stats?

you can reject an ED? I thought ED is binding.

You can decline an ED financial aid offer if it’s insufficient to support attendance.

From the ED agreement (https://professionals.collegeboard.org/guidance/applications/ethics):

“Should a student who applies for financial aid not be offered an award that makes attendance possible, the student may decline the offer of admission and be released from the Early Decision commitment.”
