Drexel for Pre-med

You have very good stats. Drexel would be a mistake! There is nothing wrong with Drexel in general but for a person with your aptitude and with the desire to go to medical school, Drexel would be a major mistake. The same can be said of Temple. If you choose one of these your classmates will have much less aptitude than you. That is good for your gpa but bad for the quality of education and subsquent MCAT scores. Being in a class of kids with more aptitude will allow a more comprehensive education.

Have a serious talk with your parents. Holy Cross (as mentioned above) is known for the number of undergrads that go on to medical school and is a great option. If you have to stay around Philadelphia look at Villanova, Haverford and Swarthmore. My son’s friend went to Villanova pre-med and is now at Georgetown Medical School. Swarthmore and Haverford send a good number of kids too.

Please don’t take this the wrong way. Drexel is a decent school and has its strong points. If you were looking to study something less competitive than medicine, it might be okay. Finally, there is a big difference in selectivity of MD programs and DO programs. When looking at where the graduates end up, keep this in mind.

??

Is Drexel a DO school?

No. Drexel has an MD program that was formerly Hahnamann (sp?). My point in the DO thing is that if he wants to get into an MD program, his scores are going to need to be pretty high. If he applies to and gets into the Drexel BS/MD program it would be worth considering but if he is going to apply to med school toward the end of college he is going to need good scores. Some schools report high percentages of students that go on to medical school but it doesn’t specify where they go. There is obviously a range of selectivity. If he has the work ethic and aptitude to get his scores and be in the top 2% of his high school class, he has a good shot at medical school if he works hard. My opinion is that he has worked hard enough for those stats and should use them to get him into a school that will give him the best undergraduate preparation.

Again, Drexel is a good college but medical school admission is very competitive.
