Drexel or TCNJ (The College of New Jersey)

Hi,
I am trying to decide between Drexel and TCNJ. If anyone can give me any insight I would appreciate it. At Drexel I was accepted into The Music Industry Program, I believe 600+ applied and there are 55 seats. Drexel runs on the trimester system it is a 4 year program with coop in summer of Soph. and Junior year. At TCNJ I would be a Interactive Multimedia Major, they have just broken ground on a new building for art and interactive multimedia. TCNJ is more traditional which I like with a good male to female ratio (I am a male.) Drexel is 60K more over the course of 4 years. The pluses of Drexel are the coop and being in the city. I know you can get internships at TCNJ so that would also be ok. It looks like I would get a more traditional college experience at TCNJ, and Drexel seems more serious with the trimesters and coop, but may be better at landing a job when i come out. My other worry is if things do not go right at Drexel I hear it is hard to transfer the credits (because of the trimester), the only reason I chose Drexel was for The Music Industry Program, I would not choose it for another program of study. At TCNJ I could just switch majors. Sorry this is long any help or input would be great.

I would do TCNJ in a heartbeat. The program for you at Drexel is excellent, but the college experience at Drexel is very lacking and the campus is horrible. Plus, Drexel is literally in the shadow of Penn. TCNJ sounds like it offers a lot for you, even with the change of majors and is a much better college experience. TCNJ is gaining a strong academic reputation and the cost savings for you are important, too. I am familiar with both schools, and I don't think this is even close as far as a decision.

You can do TCNJ + a masters in a music industry-related field and still come out ahead financially. I second MoWC's opinions on the two campus climates.

Thanks! Any one else?

I think TCNJ is the better decision - though I am a bit biased being that I have visited, considered it, and nearly attended whereas I've never even been to Drexel. Everyone I know who has gone to TCNJ has pretty much loved it, whereas that is rarely what I hear from kids I know who went to Drexel. Besides, I get the feeling that you are leaning towards TCNJ anyways from what you said. Good Luck either way!

TCNJ definetly. its really well respected in NJ and getting better every year and definetly the better college experience. more traditional, BEAUTIFUL campus. i havnt heard many great things about drexel, bad neighborhood too. my brother went to and my best friend just finished first year at TCNJ. youd have a great 4 years and come out without that extra debt and the flexibility of TCNJ is great.

When we were doing the college search for my daughter and came across the Interactive Multimedia major at TCNJ, we were really impressed. What a great major!

Any Drexelites here to give me the Drexel side!

My D is considering engineering and we went for a tour/info session at Drexel. The tour was first and then the info session. We only made it halfway through the tour when my daughter asked if we could just leave and skip the rest of the tour and the info session. She did not like the urban setting at all. The tour guide had just pointed out a 7-11 across the street and, oddly, was very proud that it was the highest grossing 7-11 in the country (or in the East or something). My daughter's reaction was that it also looks as though it is probably the most-robbed 7-11 in the country.

She has not liked any school that has been in an urban setting. TCNJ is on our list to visit next month. Based on what she has liked so far (Elon and Wake Forest) and what she has disliked (Duke, Ga Tech, Emory), TCNJ appears that it might be a possibility. You never know until you visit, kick the tires and slam the doors, of course, and she is a 17-year-old so consistency and logic aren't always in the mix.

Even without having visited TCNJ yet, though, I advise the financially responsible choice, especially since it seems to have Drexel beat in virtually everything but the specific program, and, even then has something pretty close. Okay, maybe not in the "being in the city" part, if you consider that a good thing. My daughter doesn't and I didn't many years ago when I was choosing (chose William & Mary over UPenn).

Good luck!

^^ Has your daughter considered Rice?

Part of what she didn't like about Ga Tech and Emory was the distance. She didn't seem to mind the seven/eight hours to Elon and Wake Forest (although we have family, including her godparents, in that part of North Carolina) but Atlanta was too far. Texas is probably a no-go. Her brother is six hours away (William & Mary) and he has told her that, while he does not regret his choice, it would be nice to be a little closer to home.

And, engineering is not a sure thing. She will be going to the University of Maryland Women in Engineering summer program and may have a better idea after that. Or not.
