I smoke cigarettes occasionally, and I am not embarrassed or apologetic. So many people try to make me feel like I am a stupid person because I've smoked cigarettes. Yes, I know it is terrible for me. I was in DARE just as long as you were. However, obesity is killing our nations by the millions all the time by causing hoards of diseases, but no one gets on your case if you overeat. Yes, I'm aware that it isn't fair for me to impose my secondhand smoke on others, and that you can't get secondhand fat. That's why when I smoke (which is probably about a pack a normal week, the majority of those on the weekend) I always try to be extremely considerate of those around me.

Now that I'm off my soapbox about my right to smoke cigarettes without being ridiculed, I will tell you why I started smoking - I like stimulants. Nicotine, when you first start smoking at least, gives you a slight buzz, which feels nice, but its nothing that could ever interfere with your daily life like snorting a bunch of speed could. So its easy to smoke a cigarette when you are worn-out and stressed after school, and you are revived and feel normal again 10 minutes later for work. Its also legal if you are 18, which I am, so when I was taking a break from illegal behaviors a while back, I was pretty much willing to get any kind of buzz I could, even if it meant just drinking a lot of Red Bull. Now, I mainly smoke because it makes me feel better when I'm stressed, which I know is because I started smoking in the first place, but that's how it is. I also smoke socially, which is kind of lame, I admit, but I don't apologize for it. People eat *****loads socially when they are obese and shouldn't - I consider it the same, because I'm not sucking down 20 cigarettes a day.

As for drinking, I don't enjoy being drunk that much because I lose all control. Its maddening. I like to get a good buzz, but once I'm really buzzed, I often have poor judgement and continue drinking and get really drunk, and then I'm in the situation I don't like. I also don't like hangovers. Still, I drink sometimes just because alcohol is often more accessible than my favorite - weed.

I firmly believe marijuana should be decriminalized. I'm not a pothead by any means, and I actually have probably smoked weed less than 20 times. Even though I disagree with it being illegal, I still have a problem participating, and especially posessing weed, because I don't like making choices that could ruin my future. If you get caught drinking, even drinking and driving, in my town, you get a slap on the wrist. If you get caught with marijuana, you go to jail for at least a couple days, and you end up a lot poorer by the end of it, and you have a new friend called a probation officer. I just don't want to risk that, so its not a huge part of my life. But I do strongly believe that marijuana is actually a better recreational drug in many respects than alcohol. Alcohol is more addictive than weed, it is worse for your health long-term, in the short-term it is fairly easy to overdose on alcohol, whereas it is impossible to overdose on marijuana, and marijuana does not inhibit your ability to make desicions and to drive as much as alcohol does. The main problems with pot are that it can be contaminated with more addictive and harmful drugs, and the culture surrounding it is often criminal. This can be adverted if marijuana were to be legalized and regulated by the government like tobacco, because it would not be laced, and you would not have to deal with a black market to obtain it. I think marijuana is perfectly fine, really enjoyable, and I wish people would get over old-fashioned stigmas to realize that its a good thing.
