This is for current A&M parents and students. I have a son who was just admitted to A&M and was wondering if there is a big drinking/party scene at A&M like at UT? Are there any problems with drinking in the dorms? What about the honors dorms? I look forward to your comments.

there is plenty of drinking at pretty much every college.

i think honors dorms will have less, but not none.

MikeW…I realize that there is drinking at every college;however, some have more significant problems than others. I was hoping for current parent and student input on the situation. From your posts, it does not appear that you are either.

As a parent of a current honors student living in an honors dorm, I do not believe that drinking is a problem, at least with my child and respective friends. In order to keep your scholarships you have to maintain a 3.5 GPR and if drinking were a problem no one would have scholarships! As far as the honors dorms, I wouldn’t give it another thought.

Wemel, thanks so much. How does your child like the honors dorm? Does he/she find it fairly quite for studying, etc. How are the honors courses? My son is National Merit and has requested Lechner for the fall. Any A&M advice you’d like to share?

bringbackpluto - rude much?

not that you deserve a response, because you don’t. i went to a&m. i have a daughter who is looking at going there. i know MANY MANY kids going there now. in fact about 300 kids from my DD’s high school started this fall.

so, i am quite familiar with what goes on there.

have a nice life.

MikeW: It was not my intention to be rude; I was merely stating the obvious. I had asked for current parents and students. Having attended a school, having a child applying, and knowing current students, are not the same. I also have attended a particular school and know current students, but I don’t believe I have the same insight on the day-to-day happenings at that school as a current parent of student. If you took offense, none was intended.

There are parties/drinking at A&M but not as much as UT. My dorm has drinking parties almost everyday while other dorms like Lechner don’t. But there really isn’t a problem with the drinking to me here at A&M.

A&M Has substance free housing by floor in the following Dorms: Aston, Eppright, Kruger, & McInnis.
Substance Free Housing is an option often selected by students who want to make a concerted effort to live with other students who are making similar lifestyle choices. Students participating in this program agree with Residence Life not to use or possess any illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco products while on the floor or return to the floor under the influence of such substances. To honor the rights of those who have selected this residence hall environment, these expectations also apply to guests visiting these floors.

Based on my two sons from two Universties of different state, it all depends on the friends you hang out. Based on limited opinion from S2 for Honor dorms, Lechner (last year) and Clement (this year) it is not a problem. I believe McFadden is also designated as Freshman Honor dorm this year and it probably is the same. Best wishes.

My son was a freshman in 2005. Vet school now. Anyway, he lived in the freshman honor dorm, Lechner. He is almost a non-drinker. He worried that he was going to be “weird” or “really stick out” because he did not drink. After he got there, no more worries. Quite a few who did not choose to drink. He majored in biomedical science, was active with judging team in college of Agriculture, good friends with corps guys, etc. Did not feel like he stuck out because he did not drink.

We live in Texas Panhandle. You want drinking, go to Tech. Huge party school. Also leads the nation in STD’s. Wonder if there’s a connection???

I’m a current student. I never drank in high school, but I did start drinking with my friends in the dorms freshman year. The temptation will be there, but A&M is a pretty serious academic school, so your kid shouldn’t have have a problem meeting people who know how to take care of business Sunday afternoon through thursday evening.

I’m a freshman living in the honors dorm McFadden and I can honestly say that I have not heard of a single instance of people drinking in the dorm. Most people here are pretty anti-drinking. Heck, most people in the dorm look at me funny when I have an energy drink.

Of course there are off-campus parties and such where drinking will take place but those are easy to avoid.

It’s funny how 10 people can post responses and none of them will come right out and tell you the bad news. Yes, A&M has its share of drinking. Maybe not as much as some others. If you want less drinking, try Baylor.

I lived in Lechner for two years and did not drink, nor did most of my friends. Some of the residents did drink, but they were usually the people who didn’t hang out as much in the dorm. Either way, I think it was a personal decision and the people who wanted to drink did and the people who didn’t didn’t and there wasn’t a stigma attached to either. If he doesn’t want to drink then Lechner is probably the place where he will be most comfortable socially.

He should be getting excited- the honors dorms are a great place to live!

Ha! ffhrea, I had to laugh because the people I know who went to Baylor ended up with lots of drinking peer pressure because of the big greek scene. I guess it depends on who you know.

it would be dumb to choose a school over its reputation. in reality its up to your son/daughter to make those decisions on their own.

but to answer your question, i do not see much drinking problems. Many of my friends are engineering majors but also participate in greek life. its just knowing when to have fun and when its time to work.

I am a current student in A&M. Yes, you can drink at A&M, like any other major university. I’m in engineering so I need to buckle down quite a bit, and I do. It’s all in the person to make that decision. Other times, you can go out and just have fun.
