Would a nondrinker feel left out at Colby. I know there are other things for students to do, but realistically would a nondrinker feel left out? Thanks.

I guess you might if you secretly wanted to drink. Otherwise, what would you feel left out of?

In all seriousness though, it really depends on your friends. If you make friends with people of similar interests you should be fine. I don’t drink that often and I’m always fine. I have friends who do and who don’t drink (and there are plenty of both at Colby), so it’s really not a problem.

Also, I don’t live chem-free, but if you choose to live that way, you’ll definitely make a lot of friends of a similar mind-set to yourself.

I second that, as a Colby parent. My D is a happy sophomore non-drinker, has made a zillion friends, lives chem-free and loves it. A good thing about Colby is that there doesn’t seem to be a stigma about the chem-free dorms, which can’t be said about all schools. And there are about a hundred million activities going on all the time, so it’s not like you’d be bored if you’re not drinking!

I was wondering about this too! Colby is one of my top schools…I keep going back and forth between Colby and Middlebury. The one thing that concerns me is what I have heard/read about alcohol and how central it is to campus life. I’m planning on going chem-free for a first year dorm if I do go to Colby, but I hope I’ll make other friends even if I’m not a drinker…it’s really the only thing holding me back right now! Otherwise Colby seems like a perfect match for me.

Hi Gracieboo!
Thanks for your interest in Colby.

About 20% of Colby students live in substance free dorms and another 7 or so percent live in what we call “quiet” dorms. New next year too is a specialty dorm, called dialogue housing, called Oasis. It will be in a relatively small dorm (about 40 or so students) and will feature substance free programming every weekend, from baking, to games, to movie nights, and more! We are very excited about this dorm!

Also, I strongly suggest that you visit Colby. I think you’ll find that drinking is certainly not the center of our students’ social lives and that there are always wonderful events going on campus (last weekend, we had a “Regurgatator” come to campus).

Best!

Don’t even worry about this. The great thing about Colby is that everyone is so friendly. You’ll make plenty of friends (of all kinds) no problem. Also, there is ZERO judgement based on whether or not you drink here in my experience. Finally, while Middlebury has social houses, Colby has no organized social life, making for a very open campus in that regard as well.

Yeah I don’t think you should have a problem. I am a nondrinker at Colby and I have not had any trouble. I have not been in chem free housing, but I have friends who live there so its not like there is a barrier. I will be joining chem free next year though!

Thanks for the info! I’m coming up to Colby for visit #2 on two days, for the Maine Event. Can’t wait!
