What is The legal age for drinking?
and what about Clubs? Can i enter if im 18 or is it 21 only?

The legal age in the States is 21.

Clubs vary widely--some are strictly 21+, some allow 18+ in but only 21+ to drink, some target only 18 and under (obviously they don't serve alcohol). It depends a lot on who they are targeting, the day of the week (Saturdays are prime nights and are more likely to be 21+), etc. For instance, Avalon Boston's schedule (at least until recently) was as follows:

Thursday: 18 to enter, 21 to drink, mostly hip-hop, targeting a young college crowd.

Friday: 19 to enter, 21 to drink, big name international DJs, targeting people really into clubbing

Saturday: 21+, big name local dance DJ, more upscale crowd

I would say that's typical for a US nightclub, though they vary widely.

Most people who want to drink while they are underage do so with friends in their homes before they go clubbing.

well my college "clubbing" life will suck then. i started school a year early so im 17 now, but i wont turn 18 until may!! so i wont be able to (legally) get into 18 and over clubs and stuff, and in boston theyre very strict with ids at most places. ooo ryanbis you're in boston? how easy is it to get into a club with a fake id? (im not trying to break the law, i just want to have fun)

I wouldn't know...I don't use one and personally don't like it when people do, as I've had friends whose nights were temporarily shut down because of one dumb girl with a fake ID. Granted, I was a DJ, so I also never needed an ID.

I did have a friend who was 17 our freshman year...at the time, Avalon's policy was 19+, 18+ with college ID and they would (if you were girl) let you in with just your ID. I don't know if that's still the case. There's also a few bars that seem to let anyone in (Copperfield's by Fenway comes to mind). Don't worry...I'm sure you'll more than enjoy your time in Boston.

There probably are some places that would let under 18 in, but I don't personally know of any. Saugus (a nearby town) used to have a lot of all ages afterhours nights, but you needed a car to get there and they have all since closed. When you turn 18, you'll be able to get into some places on Lansdowne Street and a few clubs, but most are 21+. If you're really into clubbing, you'll be able to get into Rise afterhours once your 18, but it's a members only club and you have to know someone.

well for girls, the age limit is more a "guideline". if you look good and your friends are 18, they may let you in. fake id's are pretty lame, but that's another option. also, many clubs have a "girls must 18+, guys must be 21+" to get in. there are also college parties where it open to college students and they don't necessarily pay attention to age since you're in college. it's really not that hard to get in if you're not 18. just have to be confident and know people. and a lot of places won't even care what age you are, as long as you don't look like you're 10.

Well Ill be in Upenn, Im 18, So u think ill be able to go clubbing?? Is there a good number of clubs with this policy ::: "girls must 18+, guys must be 21+" ?????

I was in Philadelphia for a semester and am familiar with the Upenn area. There'll be plenty of parties at Upenn, so much so that you wont even necessarily go to the club that much. My friends that go to Penn either have never been to the club and still party like crazy or they're indian and there are usually special parties at clubs thrown for them(18+) and they mainly just go to those. Usually they will either be at people's apartments or houses surrounding the campus or they will be at frats. Anyone can get into them, the ones at Penn usually dont even have an entry fee. They'll have either kegs, jungle juice, or hard liquor to drink. If you really want to go clubbing you'll have to get a few people and cab it to the other side of Philly. Otherwise its more expensive and just wont be any fun. Usually clubs will have one or two nights a week where they let 18+ in. There are a lot of clubs in Philly. If you want, use google and there's probably webpages dedicated to a list of nightclubs in philly and they'll link to the clubs' official sites so you can check out on what nights they have what going on.

club scene is definitely lively here in philadelphia. you just have to know where to go.

Can you please elaborate what these special parties are about?

Hmmmmmmm...
Where to go?!?!...........
I would like to go to the indian parties!
Hey what do u think of the greek life over there?

Go Ireland :)
Drinking age is 18 here.

WISH! i am forced to go to USA, not that im complaining. :-D

You'll probably find out more about them when you're on campus if you have indian friends. They're usually 18+, 21+ to drink, and if there aren't flyers around campus, they're usually listed at www.desiparty.com Just go to the listings and look for ones in Philadelphia. During the school year there's usually one at least every 2 weeks. They're hosted at random nightclubs. You'll find out more through word of mouth though.

ahh nice.. im assuming they play desi music right?!

rarely, they play club music, mainly hip-hop/r&b, its just like any other club only its just brown people, they may play a couple here and there, but its not like completely desi music or anything, far from it

I thought they'd play international music,etc... oh well.. a good way to hang out with fellow desis..

I don't know how it is in Boston or wherever, but I'm in SUNY Binghamton (I know, pretty bad for these boards, but it was much more a money thing than anything else) and none of the guys I hang out with go to clubs or bars. We all go to the same parties and they're all at frats or random houses in the ghetto of Binghamton (yes, there is a ghetto here, and it can be scary at two in the morning). No one cards or anything like that (a lot of the time u have to show your student ID, but not for age reasons) and it's just $5 a head to get in. Clubs are for [edited out] and girls who will get drunk on your dollar and ditch you. Bars are okay, but require ID, which just doesn't seem worth it right now given the easy access to frat keggers.

if u want to get into clubs/bars, dont go with the fake I.D.

simply get a real I.D. of someones, and have some backup, and youll never get turned down. I'm 17 and have my friends real I.D. who looks somewhat like me, and an old credit card of his. ive never had a problem...

Why am I not surprised that you've been ditched...

But, yeah, I'm sure no one goes clubbing in New York. Just people in "Boston or wherever." :/
