ditto videogamerx2.
I can't justify spending 40,000+; (even in financial aid) a year by any of the idiotic behaviour listed above. Also, I actually want to perform well in school, and make friends with people who don't need inebriants to enjoys one another's company.
I sincerely hope this thread is meant as a sad joke.

It's quite sad to see that there are those who still judge one another without even knowing them. Just because I've tried these things doesn't make me any less of a good person or any more of one. Idiotic behavior...maybe...but it affects me, and until i've crossed some line that is inappropriate or devestatingly harmful to me, I will do what I want! Something tells me that a few here will be in for a huge and maybe dissapointing surprise when they get into campus life. And NO, I don't NEED "inebriants" to enjoy someone's company however it provides a hell of a good time.

so here's the deal w/the drugs & alcohol scene at columbia:

for those of you who are worried, there's really no reason to be. there are certainly drugs at columbia (i know of ppl doing weed, cocaine, and shrooms), but these things are by no means prevalent. they do not dominate the social scene; i'd say a pretty small percentage of the student body uses drugs on a regular basis. the main thing to remember is that these things exist everywhere and are probably far less common at columbia than at most other schools in the nation.

regarding alcohol...it's pretty hard to go "out" on a saturday night if you have no interest in consuming alcohol. going "out" usually means going to a bar, club, or party, where you are bound to find alcohol. it's tough to enjoy nyc's nightlife if you don't drink. with that said, there are certainly ppl who don't consume alcohol at all. keep in mind, too, that the frats at columbia don't have much of a presence...i'd say they throw a few good parties per semester. as a result, there tends to be less alcohol on the campus itself than you would find at, say, ivies like datmouth or penn.

i agree with abetterkid - don't judge kids for doing drugs, especially if you have never done them yourself.

if you have done them, and know the experience and what it brings with it, then you are worthy of passing judgment, but otherwise, please don't judge.

I didn't mean to sound condescending...but what do you expect me to think when someone starts a vote on drugs and drinking? I suppose I must have been sheltered all of my life for this to shock me. Anyway, I didn't have to answer your post, so I apologize for judging you. Good luck next year.

No worries - I just figured someone should break the ice with this since, seeing how we will all be going to college in new york city, alcohol and drug prevalance will be pretty high, and it will be a thing that everyone will undoubtedly face during their 4 years in college

Though I personally choose not to use any drugs except alcohol and caffeine in moderation, I understand your request not to be pre-judged. While visiting Columbia, I met the smartest pot-heads I've ever met; it's really something to hear a bloodshot discourse on particle physics!

However, what's with the cocaine use? Things that won't harm you permanently (marijuana) I can understand and I won't judge, but using cocaine and other harder drugs is pretty much just stupid. I think it's more than fair to judge someone poorly for doing things virtually guaranteed to cause brain damage.

And likewise, there's a fair judgement call on someone as a person if they spend an excessive amount of their time doped up.

i people like to smoke and drink let them do it.....if they dont that is perfectly fine. I smoke and drink and i have fun doing it, and i will most likely do it at Columbia
