We recently visited several schools small LAC's. We heard a troubling story about one of the schools we had been seriously considering. Not only did one of the athletic coaches alledgedly buy beer for the team, the coach made drinking part of the practice. Needless to say we were upset to hear this. I realize that drinking is an inevitable part of college life, but to be given beer by a coach and pressured to drink is really going too far. Has anyone heard any stories like this? How can we make sure this isn't going on at the schools we are considering? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Not sure if you’re referring to this school or not, but Washington & Lee is a tiny LAC that’s notorious for drinking. I think the student body is like 85% Greek.

They literally have official, school-sponsored buses that run to and from the off-campus frat houses on weekends to cart back the stumbling drunks who couldn’t drive 5 feet w/o totaling something. I got this straight from a student rep at a local college fair. She didn’t have any qualms or reservations about telling me that.

Nope. This school actually has no Greek life.

There’s a big difference between Then and Now as it relates to alcohol policies on campus. What may have been wink-wink acceptable a few years back is strictly prohibited – and enforced – now. I would be very skeptical of any story that purports that a coach provides alcohol (much less stipulates drinking as part of the training program) at any college or university in 2009. Back in the day, yes, it happened. Resident advisors procured as well. But no more.

If your child is seriously considering this college I’d suggest that you or s/he probe more deeply into the truth of the account. It may well have happened at one time but most likely it doesn’t anymore.
