Drinking Water or Tea?

Hi, I will be living in a mini-suite in Towle Hall in Unit 2. That means five people will share one restroom with two sinks.

I remember reading that you could drink the tap water without any filtering at Berkeley because the water is so clean. Is that true?

But just to be safe, I may consider buying a filter? I remember there was a recommended filter, but I do not remember what it is called and where I can get it? Can anyone help me here?

And I also like to drink tea. Is it possible to get boiled water in the dorms?

There's no "recommended" filter. Just get a popular filter like "Brita" and you'll be fine. The tap water is safe to drink without any filtering.

I believe there are kitchens scattered around each dorm, so I guess you could find some sort of boiled water device.

You do realize that you can drink any tap water from anywhere, right? The government regulates water plants and they have to meet certain criteria, there is no "unsafe" tap water. In fact Dasani and Aquafina are bottled at public water sources...i.e.: tap water! Aquafina's source is actually the Detroit River!

But...because the first thing people talk about is the "taste", you are right, berkeley gets some of the very 'best' water, from Hetch Hetchy. I live in a studio apartment, and i just drink straight tap water and it tastes better than any bottled water I've had.

There are kitchens, but they're only equipped with a microwave, oven, and stove. You'll have to bring your own electric kettle or hot water dispenser if you want tea.

Berkeley and EBMUD actually doesn't get any water from Hetch Hetchy, but from the Mokelumne River in the Sierras. Anyways, still tastes great.

^ ugh what about ramen... i cant believe they dont provide hot water..

I'm bringing a hot water dispenser for my dorm so i can have tea. tea is goood :)

Meet your new friend -

Amazon.com: electric kettle

You -can- get ramen close enough to boiling in a microwave to make ramen absolutely fine.

u can use a microwave

The tap water is excellent, and it tastes amazing when compared to water from southern California. Honestly, there's no need for a water filter.

yeah dude just be thrifty. it amazes me how many berkeley students are completely retarded when it comes to real life things.

seriously man, you're worried about gettin hot water for yourself???? truly epic lulz.

a_weasel, i'm sure if im in a situation where i desperately need hot water, i can figure out how.

but considering my family isn't low on money, i rather be prepared than in the situation where i need to heat my water in the microwave. kthxbye. :)

. . . and the downsides of heating water in the mwave are?

the water will take too long to boil and won't be heated evenly and will taste weird.

also that means i need to get a container to store the water in the mwave.

omg celsius, then get whatever ya want. I can't believe this thread is still here. I'm soo sorry that Berkeley doesn't provide you with every little thing you believe is necessary, but you're in college now. Mom and Pops won't be there to provide you with everything, you're gonna have to make-do.

yeah, okay.

the question should have been: "what do most students at Berkeley do to get hot water?"

the simple answer that would suffice would have been: "they get an electric kettle, but some use a microwave"

okay, thank you everyone.

This is the funniest thing I've ever read.

Regarding the tap at Berkeley: a parent ( she is a scientist) I know attended a lecture by a Cal prof at last year's Parent's Weekend. The subject was all about how the tap water in Berkeley (which tastes great btw) has a chemical in it that isn't so healthy. I cannot remember what it is, but it starts with the letter B. This particular parent's son had a bad reaction to the water and developed serious health problems which took forever to figure out. I bought a Brita for my son the next day. That is the only time I have ever heard anything negative about the water there though.

I'm not sure you're going to be very good at college.

@bessie: you're probably thinking of bisphenol A. it is safe according to the FDA
