Drinking?

I am really interested in Washington and Lee, but am put off by the drinking. With my application, admission shouldn't be a problem, but my question is, will I be able to have a good time at W&L if I don't drink? I mean, I go to parties all the time and don't drink, but does anyone do that at W&L? Will I be able to go a good greek house, even though I'm dry?
(not one of those "balanced man" programs - I have a friend who is in one at UVa, and he hates it)?

Also, the size is discerning. Because of the small student body, are the sins of individuals the talk of the table at meals? Is gossip a problem?

Thanks

yes you can get by without drinking, i have many friends who do so (and everyone loves them). as for going greek... it kind of depends on what you mean by a "good" greek house. you probably couldn't be dry in one of the big four, but there are definitely houses with dry pledgeship.

yes, people will gossip, but not for very long.

It depends on what kind of person you are. That should answer your question. If being around someone else who drinks is going to somehow force you to drink..don't go. But understand it's your fault, not theirs.

You should be able to go just about anywhere and have a great college experience. College is what you make it, not someone else.

beautyistruth,

So can you id the "big four" greek houses ?

ummm, KA, Phi Kapp, Phi Delt and SAE, i think. Sigma Chi might be in there. i'm actually not sure.

I think that we no longer have the big four only the big three as Beta isn't back on campus yet. But the Big Three would read Phi Kap, SAE, and Phi Delt.

And yes you can get into the big three if you don't drink because one of the older guys in my frat does not drink at all. It all depends on your personality.

How do you leave KA out of the big four? (and the spot that belonged to Beta is vacant)

I leave KA out of the big four because part of the definition is that any of us in the big four are not allowed to have mixers with soroities. And Im pretty sure that KA has mixers.

Interesting, I didn't know there was an actual "definition" as to what qualified as a big four fraternity.

I'm not too sure about that. There is no set definition but the freshmen have only been at school for 4 weeks and the parents are getting reports back of the different organizations.

That's surprising to me. I would have thought that the most respected fraternities would be bragging about how they have mixers with all the cutest ladies. What's the rationale for this?

I really have no idea what the rationale is behind it. It doesn't seem to be a set in stone rule, but more like the commonly accepted practice. I know that I have never attended a mixer, and I haven't heard of any of the others having them either. They may have them with certain sororities but I have never seen it or heard about it.

huh. you're right. thinking back, i have never heard of anyone having a mixer with phi delt, phi kapp, or SAE... hmm.

Could it be that all young ladies from the sorority houses, in addition to others , always have an open invitation ?

well that's a given. unless it's a mixer any W&L student goes to the party, pretty much. and mixers open at 10.
