After reading a bunch of posts about parties, there seemed to be a lot of people who plan on not drinking in college. How many people plan to drink in college? Why or why not?

While I cannot 100% predict what I will or will not do in college, I'm pretty comitted to not drinking in college (and especially no underage drinking). If I wanted to drink now as a senior in HS I have plenty of opportunities, but I just never have thought anything of it. One of my cousins was almost killed (in ICU for about 2 weeks, year+ of physical therapy) because his "friend" drove drunk and crashed into a tree, so I've learned from that to not put myself in that situation by drinking myself or being in a car with a person I don't know who has had alcohol or anyone, even if I know them well, who has had more than 1 drink, maybe 2 tops. I just don't want to put myself in that situation.

I drink now, so of course I'll continue to do so in college. I don't drink extensively or especially often, since usually I'm busy working, but every now and again I like to have a good time with booze. I wouldn't want to do it all the time, but at the right time it's a fantastic thing.
(Why do people automatically equate drinking with drunk driving? That's what taxis are for, dudes! Or the subway, if you're cheap.)

Where I am, its legal to drink at my age :D. Stuffy US alcohol policy

I drink now, and I'll continue to. Just keep it within reason and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

where im at theres no legal drinking age! yeap, kids start drinking in front of their parents anywhere since theyre 12....
whatever i still dont drink

No drinking for me. If I decide to attend, I will probably be in NROTC and there are random tests for drugs and alcohol. BUT, I don't drink anyway because of my running...no real desire to either.

in moderation. i won't abstain, but i won't drink myself retarded every weekend.
i'm swedish, and the swedish drinking age is 18, which means i'll technically be legal (according to my culture).

majadito-In the U.S. (at least in my state), parents are allowed to give their children alcohol. There's definitely a different philosophy about it though vs. overseas.

There are people who drink and people who don't drink at every college. The percentages vary from BYU to Ohio State, of course, but options exist everywhere.

As for myself, I don't really like to post about stuff like this in a public forum :-.

I would drink but in moderation. If I attend Harvard I will be on a varsity sport so I would have to maintain good balance. I think balance that is the key factor. Someone who is unable to balance their drinking should take necessary precautions so that they are not in a situation hazardous to them or someone else.

I've had alcohol on a number of occasions, and will be spending the summer in Spain and plan on drinking, but I'm always careful and don't go over my limit when I drink. I've never had enough to be full out drunk, especially when I'm driving.
I think you just have to be smart about it and know your limits. Problem is, most teens in the US just aren't.

It's harder to be smart about it when the government places an insanely high age limit on drinking. For most teens drinking becomes a novelty, not a social activity, so they take advantage of the booze when they can.

I know it is so sad. If we had a lower age limit maybe people would learn to drink safely. Harvard is better than lots of schools like Sewanee where students run to the edge of campus drink fast and then run back.

I'll probably smoke more than I drink in college. Unless I end up doing cross-country. I don't think I would be good enough to warrant the loss of fun, though. I'll see where I get into. Probably applying to Harvard EA next year though.

like a fish

Isn't a little alcohol good for your health...i thought i read that somewhere.

A glass of wine a day is good. Getting wasted is bad.

I drink now....so why stop.
