How is the drinking environment at U.Va.? Do a majority of students participate in it? Are there plenty of other social options to get involved in if you do not want to drink? It seems like from what I am hearing, drinking is more prevalent at UVA than at a lot of college campuses. Let me know if this is true or false.

lots of people drink. There are other social options, you kinda have to look for them, but they are there. There are probably people more versed in this than I that can help you out.

Drinking is at essentially all schools and pretty much the same. While I knew my school had a drinking culture (I dont go to UVA although I wish I did), I didnt realize it was this bad. From what I seem to have gathered, it doesnt change anywhere.

Drinking is popular but other things certainly are too. And fwiw, "partying" doesn't necessarily imply drinking. There are teetotalers who enjoy going out on weekends with friends who do drink.

Yeah...right. Keep telling yourself that.

Keep telling myself what?

Surely there has to be tons of other things to do besides drinking right? What the heck is boston on about?

yeah, boston, thats actually true. I know a couple of people that go out with their friends to parties where there is alcohol and dont drink. Its better if you with another person who is also not drinking, but its really no big deal, and a lot of people end up doing it. So, if you enjoy partying, but not drinking, you'd be fine.

I wish others felt the same way.

The vast majority of people here at least drink occasionally. Alcohol at parties occurs more often than anything else, but there are still enough parties here, generally hosted by various organizations or groups, that don't involve alcohol and are pretty fun. Also, like other people have said, you could just go to parties without drinking anything. That probably won't work as well at a fraternity party, where drinking is the main concern, but is fine for any other kind of party (which are all better than frat parties anyway). Plus you can DD and everyone will think you're awesome.

And if you don't want to go out any particular night, there are always some events around grounds or downtown. One of my roommates doesn't drink or party, but he participates in numerous events/organizations and is always keeping busy.

at uva almost everybody drinks. if you don't you are immediately rejected and looked upon with disgust.

thats not true at all

haha. i know. but to the op, at most any college drinking is going to be an aspect of the social life but of course there are still going to be many that do not drink. my best friend here has never drank (hard to believe) yet he still parties with the rest of us. drinking is an individual choice at any school and i don't think it is a larger issue here. most everyone will find their place, trust me.
