Drinking

I was wondering if any current students could tell us about the relationship between law enforcement/campus security and the student body. Are they often in search of students to hand out underage drinking citations to? If so, how are these dealt with and does it eventually get expunged from one's record? Do they ever check dorms in search of incriminating items or force their way into people's rooms? I'm not much of a partier, but I'm just curious to know since I am completely unfamiliar with college security and with the laws in Vermont.

They’re very chill about it. The only time you will ever get a citation is if you are at a registered party and one or two of the worst P-Safe officers are there or if you are walking across campus with a beer in your hand. Somebody will almost always flash the lights at parties if p-safe is there so you know to put your drink down. They will NEVER actually come into your room, much less force their way in or search it. If you are having a super-loud party they will ask you to turn it down from in the hallway.

Oh, and even if you get a citation, you have to get three before anything happens, and it’s not like you have to pay a fine or anything. The first few are basically meaningless.

Stay on campus and you’ll be fine, as the town cops and state troopers are known to be quite a bit less accommodating.

It was a very welcome sight to see officers who are there to do their job (that is, keep people safe and help out students) rather than there to get people in trouble (as seems to be the case at a lot of schools my friends go to.

if you live in a freshman dorm, they actually can knock in your room and get in/search for alcohol, and you might get a citation if you are caught with drinks, but you’ll have enough time to put them on the floor. they also pour out whatever you have that’s visible. as you become a sophomore, though, if you don’t encounter one of the 2-3 annoying officers, you should be fine. just be careful if you live in a freshman dorm.

as for the citations, it’s impossible to get one as long as you’re not drinking outside or caught with a beer in your hand. i’m a junior and i was stupid enough to get one in one of the first nights of my freshman year, so you should be fine with that.

i think the public safety system works fine in middlebury; they certainly are doing their job well and their first task is definitely to ensure that students are healthy rather than causing them any inconvenience. some are actually really cool dudes if you get to know them.
