Drivers License and Insurance

Is it possible to get a License but not have Insurance (and there just not drive)? For example, if I get a License but then go to college (where I will not be driving) do I absolutely HAVE to get insurance?

It’s illegal to drive without insurance. Frankly, I don’t see why you’d even want to. Accident repairs are ridiculously expensive.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t read the question carefully enough. Yeah, you can have license and no insurance. But you’d better not be driving.

Lol, I’m only 16 but I would guess yes, I think the law still requires you to have an insurance in that situation.

Well if you’re not driving, chances are you won’t get caught. Even greater chance that you won’t need a car.

well, I have license and no insurance so it’s not like…physically impossible or anything

it is kinda illegal and risky for me to drive but I do it anyway…because I’m a rebel (and because insurance at my age is insanely expensive)

Insurance is on the car not the licence holder.

If your driving an uninsured car thats illegal.

If your driving someone else’s car then they need to have insurance on the car not you, as long as their insured you can drive the car (But - they may not have enough coverage to cover the full cost of an accident and then the other party would sue you if your at fault).

The only exception is that if you live at home (even occasionally) you need to be on your parents policy or never drive their car.

Haha thanks everyone for the replies! So basically as long as I don’t ever drive, it should be fine. When you are about to get your license they only care if the car you are using to take the test has insurance right?

Insurance isn’t quite as expensive for teenagers as you might think. I pay roughly 60-70 dollars a month. Granted, I’m under “classic car” insurance for my dad’s old Porsche and received a gratuitous 35% “good grades discount”.

Why not drive? :-/
