Driving in Ann Arbor

^^ I agree with this response. I also recommend undergrads use the ZipCar service.

I didn’t attend Michigan for undergrad (I graduated from Northwestern), and survived four years of college without a car. I relied on ZipCar (previously known as Flexcar) and Chicago CTA (bus/rail).

In D.C., I didn’t bring a car. I used the ZipCar program (transferable to many U.S. cities) and Metro rail/bus system. I also used the Geogetown University Transportation shuttle when I was working at Georgetown University.

After living in Chicago and Washington D.C., I have become pretty savvy with public transportation now. I will admit both cities are much better with mass transit than southeast Michigan. Ann Arbor is pretty easy to get around and very pedestrian-friendly.

When I start graduate school this fall, I’m planning to rely mostly on the AATA bus system. I will only use my car for shopping and when I need to visit Metro Detroit.

Having a car has proven to be pretty convenient for someone like myself, who needs to buy groceries on a weekly basis. It also makes traveling (to Chicago, Detroit, etc.) much easier. Freshman don’t really need cars as everything is provided in the dorms and you most likely will just want to stay on campus on the weekends.

If you’re on north campus you have nothing to worry about.
