Post here if the driving laws in your state are ****ing you off right now.

I'll go first. I've got my junior lisence right now, but I can only drive to work. I have to take drivers ed, or I won't be able to drive anywhere for a year and a half. All the drivers ed programs during the summer ran while I was away at a summer program. Now, I need to find a drivers ed program that will work for me so that I can actually drive in 6 months. I hate the driving laws in my state.

Driving laws here don't really bug me. But last year, they were trying to pass a law where you had to everyone born after 1990 would have to wait until they were EIGHTEEN to get a LEARNER'S PERMIT. Thank goodness it didn't go through, though.

I like my driving laws, just wish the curfew was later. Not that I get pulled over, I don't look 16... I always get offered wine lists and crap haha. But my parents are super conservative and they make me be home by 11 (the curfew).

In CA you have to take drivers ed before you can get a learner's permit.. with the learners permit you are only allowed to drive with someone over the age of 25 in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Once you have had your learners permit for like 750? hours of driving time (nobody except my parents actually logged hours and adhered to this rule), or turn 16, you take a written test and a behind the wheel test to get your drivers liscense. For the first 6 months you have a provisional liscense where you are not allowed to drive with anyone under the age of 25 in the car, and not between 12-5am. For the 6 months after that you can have whoever you want in the car, but still can't drive between 12-5am. But if you turn 18 during this time.. you can do whatever you want.

You have to keep your permit for 9 months before you can get your license .. that kinda irritates me, i'm ready for my license now

What really bugs me is when i'm driving .. and i go like 5 above the speed limit, and i'm with my mom .. i swear she freaks out soo much, and tries to take control of the steering wheel .. i'm like "mom, please you're gonna cause a freakin accident" .. or when we're driving really late at night and NO ONE is outside, and she still makes me stop COMPLETELY (i.e. speed is exactly at 0) at EVERY stop sign for a ful 5 mins .. and i know it's good driving habits, but no one likes a slow driver, or one that stops constantly on the road .. argh. It's just little stuff like that that irks me a lot .. driving with my dad is a little more bearable, sometimes i go 70 on a 55 limit highway when no one is around and he's reading his newspaper saying "you're doin good kiddo" .. probably cuz he's used to speeding himself.

we only have to have our learners permit for 6 months, then we get our junior li. unless ur 17 w. drivers ed, then u get ur full li.
im 16.5, so i have to take drivers ed and wait 6 months... :-/ grr...

For Albertans, you can get your learners at 14 (lots of rules with the learners. You have to have someone over the age of 18 next to you, I think there's a limit to passengers, etc.)
At 16, you can get the graduated license (drive on your own between the hours of I think 6am and 11 pm).
At 17 you can get your actual license.

There's a minimum one year gap between each level.

It's not that bad here. You can get your learner's permit at 15 1/2, and you have to hold it for at least 6 months (your not allowed to take your test until your 16) with 50 logged hours with your parents (someone over 21 - my brother is 26 and takes me out a lot), 24 hours in-class training and 8 hours in-car training. Once you get your license, you're not allowed to drive between 1-5am until your 17. Regardless, if you're under the age of 18 you need to hold your learner's permit for 6 months and do the 50 logged hours, 24 hours in-class and 8 hours in car.

I'm in driver's ed right now - none of it really bothers me. I'm already 17 (my dad wouldn't let me get my temps until recently), so the curfew doesn't apply to me anyway. The 50 logged hours stinks, but that's because my dad is a psychotic (sarorah - I feel your pain. Does your mom also scream about trees, people, CURBS, etc. that are 50ft away? My dad does that - or in the middle of a BUSY street he'll scream for me to stop, and I'll think there's something I'm about to hit and brake - then he says I didn't brake fast enough or I braked too fast and should've had my bumper aligned with a tree thats 6 inches to our right.) I don't know, after driver's ed with all the dreadful movies they show, I wouldn't mind if they upped the temp. driving period. I don't think it'll help minimize accidents in our age group - you can move the driving age up and the accidents will follow, it has to do with experience. But a lot of people don't learn good, safe habits when they're driving.

I like to drive, but I only have my permit, so one of my parents always has to be in the car with me when I drive, which really sucks because I consider myself ok, but they think I'm terrible. My dad is so critical, so I never drive with him anymore, but my mom is almost as annoying. They get really mad when I don't even do anything wrong, like going 5 mph over the speed limit. Sometimes, they'll yell out suddenly, and I'll panic and stop or something...I've been close to causing accidents this way.

Honestly, I think people should have to take driver's ed every few years - like, when you're 40 and again when you're 60 - my dad is THE WORST driver and he doesn't believe me when I tell him the laws! He thinks you're allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing another car. He thinks U-turns are completely legal (even when the no u-turn sign is posted). He gets road rage. He tailgaits. He speeds (we were going 95 on a 65mph highway - our jeep speedomotor only goes to 100). He think he can make me stop randomly in the middle of the street, a BUSY street. He tells me it's ok to change lanes, and I start to, and then he yells so I swerve back into my lane - yeah, I think his goal is for me to cause an accident so I can't drive until I'm 18 or 21.

Well everyone my age has gotten screwed over. new school rules (major changes), new sat, new graduation requirements, and new driving laws.

Where I live they made a few changes. 1) After you get your license you can't drive with anyone in the car for 3 months, after that only with family members (one family member limit) for for another 3 months then you actually have a normal license.

You also have to take a 20 hours drug and alcohol class (which is stupid b/c we have how much education on this subject in public schools...). It is also virtually impossible now (due to lack fo DMVs) to get a license appointment. I didn't secure mine till late next spring, and I'm just going to wait till after my 18th b-day for my test now. ( i go to boarding school.... driving isn't very important).

So yeah, stupid rules, and as soon as you turn 18, you get to by pass all the new rules (yay for me... i get to save money and not spend 20hrs in boredom).

Here... provisional licence at 17. On a first provisional license you have to have a licensed driver over 21 in the car with you. You have to take a driver theory test to get the provisional license. Once you've taken enough lessons to prepare you for the test, you can take the driving test... but due to a lack of examiners there's a 9-12 month wait for test dates. :(

oh man i love the driving when i'm not with my parents
turning down the windows, pumpin the radio thru your speakers.. cruisin around town with ur buds, it's so much fun !
i dont mind doing errands either, i just love driving .. maybe i should become a taxi driver .. i dont know where anything is though .. come to think of it, i've never seen a female taxi driver.

*Usually you go the day of your 17th birthday and then drive to school late. BUT my birthday just HAPPENS to be May 5 - which is the day of the APUS exam, which means I either have to go AFTER the exam or on Monday morning. For once, I hate my birthday! I already have mine own car, too! But I can't drive it on my own until the END of junior year. Whatever, I'd hate to give people rides all the time.

I hate when people cut you off! And then like stares me down...or so I think. The thing is that if I can sense their intimidation or stuff of that sort, I cut em back, and then we go on for a while cutting each other. Seriously I get road rage so easily.

Well I got my provisional license (like junior) a week ago. Starting October 1, Maryland is changing 40 hours of driving education to 60. Also, you now have to wait 6 months instead of 4 months to get a provisional. No wonder my sister was pushing me to get my license. The MVA screws teens over seriously...

So its...
15 years, 9 months- Permit
16 years, 3 months- Provisional
17 years, 7 months- full license
