I'm a first year and my orientation counselor told me to sign up for a class that is not a GE and is not required for my major. It is MUCH harder than I anticipated and I am struggling. I'm in danger of being on academic probation. I will receive a B in one class, pass in another, and most likely a C- (hopefully) in the other. I talked to an academic advisor but I would like some more feedback. If I stay in the class in which I have a C- my GPA will be terrible and I will be on academic probation. However, if I drop the class now (10th week) it shows up on my transcript as a dropped class. Which is better? To have a terribly low GPA and a bad grade on the transcript? Or to have a dropped class and a better GPA? Also, dropping this class will leave me with ten credits for fall quarter. However, I was also told that since I have AP credits, I am not behind on the credits required for full-time status. Is this true? Please, I need to make the decision immediately so any help would be great! Thank you so much!

Are you taking 2 classes, or is one of your classes P/NP?

One class is P/NP

I’m in the same situation as you kinda.

Someone advised me to take a class that I shouldn’t have taken.

I have one P/NP

and am in danger of academic probation… probably will receive a B and a C- or hopefully C

I’m not really sure what I would do…
I would go with probation though. I mean next quarter just do way better and that’s it.

Getting permanently marked on your transcript saying you dropped last minute doesn’t sound too good.

At least with just bad grades you can show an upward trend.

Taynicole, the answer to this depends upon the rules at your university regarding satisfactory academic progress and whether or not you have financial aid.

Which is better? It depends. Some school use a WP and WF notation on a transcript, which others just use W. Therefore, you may have to think about how you would explain a WF (withdraw fail) at some future date.

You also need to remember that dropping a class MAY result in you owing the school tuition money for unearned credits for fall term. Tuition money was provided to you for completion of a certain number of credits. At some schools you pay by the unit, while at others you pay either a part-time or full-time tuition amount. Keep in mind this is a financial issue as opposed to the units needed for satisfactory financial progress (which your AP credits help keep you out of that problem.)

There is a complicated formula used to determine as to whether or not the school may bill you for “unused” financial aid money. How does that effect you in the future? If you owe money on federal financial aid money you are not allowed to receive any more funds until you either 1) repay the money owed to the school or 2) make repayment arrangements and show you have been actively making payments. If you are on financial aid, you really need to check with them to find out what happens if you withdraw at this late date.

Finally, some colleges and universities allow you to retake a course for a higher grade. In some cases the low grade is replaced with the higher one, at other schools both grades are shown side-by-side but only the higher one is used in grade calculation. You may need to do some more research in order to make an more informed decision regarding “Which is better?”
