drop a course while applying for UCs?

so I just drop my calculus class because I was receiving bad scores.I wonder if I should not apply at all since I drop the course.I still have two other classes going on.

Do you need calc for your major? And are you receiving a W now?

yea.i needed calculus.yup it’s a W on my transcript now.

Drop it and take it next semester, unless you’re required to have it done in the fall. You should satisfy the general UC requirements with college Algebra, which you already have, and that must be completed by this semester.

UCs have this one required math course whicI passed and this calc class is just part of my major, not general ed.

What is your major? If it something like Economics where you have to have a Calculus course as a prerequiste, even though it is somewhat peripheral to your major, it may not hurt you that much if you retake it and get a C or better next semester. If you are majoring in Physics, Astronomy or Engineering and you dropped Calculus because you were not doing well in it that is a major problem.

Hold on, Hold on… I just had to drop in and correct ^this guy^

Calculus is absolutely not “peripheral” in the study of economics. If you struggle with math, (C in Calculus), Econ will devour you. If you dont believe me, look at the syllabi, problem sets, and practice exams for Berkeley’s Micro 101A. Not to mention Econometrics

The Major is pretty much applied math in econ.

Anyway OP, dude thats a tough situation and it depends on ur major, schools, and when u need Calc done.

well my major is chemistry for now(but i have plans to chnage it).I have IGETC done so calculus and all the other science courses are for my major.either way,I spoke to my counselors and they say it doesnt look too bad since its my first W.i just have to notify the campuses I applied to let them know of the changes.

I think you probably do need to change your major. While Billionaire might object, I can assure you that you would need to know far more Calculus and advanced mathematics to get a degree in Chemistry than you would for a degree in Economics or any other social science. Since you were a Chemistry major you were probably taking the Calculus course for physical science and engineering majors which is a very rigorous course. There are at most colleges Calculus courses for Life Science majors, Business/Economics majors and Social Science majors that are not as demanding as the course you were taking and which you might be be able to succeed in. While the physical sciences such as Chemistry probably are not realistic for you there are plenty of other things you can major in.

hello guys… i have a similar situation. Can i drop a class im taking this semester thats not related to my major at all but just a transferable course? Even though I put it on my tag application and everything? And whould i still put this course i plan to drop on the application in november?

@twistnswif: Which UC are you applying to?

If you drop it now, it’ll show up as a W on your record, so yes, you’d have to put that on your general UC app in the fall.

like Grimes99,you have to state it on your personal statement why you drop.is dont become a big concern unless your GPA drops below 3.0.

You don’t have to state it on your personal statement, you just have to input it as a class you took with a grade of a “W” when you fill out the academic record portion of the app.

I have questions too and would like to share here.
Does the calculusBC “W” on transcript looks real bad on upper UC application or private school? Is it helpful if I retake it at local community college this spring and finish before next June?
