Drop Ap Chem for Ap Enviromental?

hey all

i am currently taking 4 aps: AP Chemistry, Ap Poly Sci, Ap Calculus BC and Ap English. I was debating whether or not to drop ap chemistry and take ap enviromental instead, as it is a easier course than ap chemistry and im not sure if i can handle the workload

my guidance however ( i am skeptical about what she told me) said that colleges look down on ap enviromental. I was wondering if taking enviromental instead of ap chemistry would affect my chances of getting into college.

AP Chemistry is generally more respected than Environmental - and is also harder.

How did you do in your previous chemistry course? If you did well in honors chemistry - and had a decent teacher - you are more likely to be well-prepared for the AP.

i did horrible in regular chemistry because i had the worse teacher possible. Even though chem is harder, would colleges look down on envir? Besides that one i am also taking 3 other aps... so i think they would take that into consideration?

Colleges seriously aren't putting that big of an emphasis on AP scores as you think they do. If you have a better shot at getting a 5 in APES, then take that as opposed to chem. I can tell you from experience that next to no one enjoys AP Chem, and while getting a 5 is respectable, its hardly worth it with your course load as it is (I remember cramming all of spring break for JUST THAT AP to get a 5....'course my other one was English xD), and could have an effect on your other APs as well. To get that magical 5, it would seem as though you run the risk of dropping potentially easier 5s in your other classes. That trade doesn't sound very appealing. If you're not comfortable with chem, dont' take it, because I can pretty much guarantee you that colleges would prefer a 5 in APES to a 3/NP in Chem.

peppers, thank you for your wonderful response but heres something im worried about

Im in my senior yr so colleges wont rly see my scores until after im accepted to a college which means that they will just see the classes im taking. Im worried about them thinking that because i took ap es, im lazy and took the easy way out rather than taking chem. I also can guarantee a higher average in APES than in chem, which is the main reason i want to switch

"i did horrible in regular chemistry because i had the worse teacher possible."

That is going to put you at a disadvantage in AP Chemistry, particularly for your first marking period (that will probably appear on the HS transcript that is sent to colleges). Unless you are prepared to work major portions of your anatomy off, AP Enviro might be a more reasonable choice.

The thing to remember is that there are only so many hours in a day. You need time to study, complete applications, visit colleges, sleep and (maybe even) have fun.

HECK NO!!!

dont drop ap chem!!!

it's must much more useful than APES; it's a "core" science class, where APES is not.

what if i get a bad score in ap chem though, verses a good score in apes

your GC is correct. What other sciences have you taken? Bio, Physics, Chem? If so, you already have the Big Three, so APES won't be viewed as negatively.

What is your intended major in college? If your intended major is Language or journalism, for example, APES could be viewed as a good 4th year science class. But, if you are applying to an engineering school, AP Chem & Physics are practically required.

A C in AP Chem will hurt for selective colleges, but a B will not.

i am applying for an accounting major and i have taken AP bio and AP phys as well as honors chemistry. THe reason i dont want to take AP chem is because i want to reserve time for my other 3 aps that im taking, including ap calc bc, poly sci, and ap english.

What schools are you applying to?

The only reasons I can think of for you to take AP Chem are
1- you are applying to only insanely competitive schools
2- you are hoping to gain AP credit for college and graduate early
3- you really like chemistry

my reach school is cornell, but takign ap chem will prob lower my grades. I already have ap physics and ap biology under my belt as well as honors in phys chem and bio. I dont like chemistry and i dont think im goign to pass the test. Other schools are like boston college, boston university

you already have the big three sciences, so swapping Chem for APES won't be a big deal.

btw: I assume you mean AP Government....
