I am currently a Junior in HS and taking 6 APs this year. My current GPA is around 3.8 UW and 4.6 W, 34 ACT. All of the classes this year except AP Chem have been good and I enjoy the material in those classes. In all the 5 others (Eng, History, Span, Comp Sci, and BC Calc) I have a A-/A. In AP Chem, I will most likely finish the semester with a B- with an exam in two weeks. I have tried approaching the class different ways such as learning from different sources and going for help, but it’s not getting better at all. I find the teacher hard to work with also. I would be able to drop the class without it showing up on the transcript, but I would not be able to drop to a regular Chem class. Next year I will probably take AP Physics (I have some experience with physics and I enjoy it a lot more than chemistry) for science, so most likely it would not be possible to take a Chem class. I did take a class freshman year that was a Honors Chem/Bio followed by AP Bio last year, so would it be a problem not taking a chemistry class in HS?
I’m leaning towards dropping the class, because it would allow me to spend more time making sure the other classes are stronger and hopefully get some the couple of A-s to As. I don’t want to pursue science or medicine or anything similar to that in the future. I’m looking at some combination of a computer science and/or sports management major in college, maybe business. Thinking about UVA, UMich, UCLA, USC, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, Duke, Syracuse, and IU/Purdue (instate). So, does it look bad to be missing Chemistry? Should I keep it, spend a lot of time with it, and probably get a B at the highest while some of the other classes might fall slightly, or should I focus on the other classes I enjoy? Any feedback would be appreciated.
