I'm a college park scholar..and i plan on double majoring in computer science and information technology...i dont think i have time to do cps..so I'm thinking of dropping CPS...is it possible? And also what is the benefit of being a cps?

One positive is that you are required to do an internship and many of these kids get hired on for the summer. This is a better job on your college resume when you join the real world than working at Best Buy.

My son is in college park scholars and there is no internship with his program. What programs require an internship? I think if he were to do things over again he would not have enrolled in college park scholars.

I know that Govt and Politics mandate an internship to get the citation. I am not sure why he wouldn’t since, if he had no req internship, than all he would have to do is a 1 hr colloquium weekly for 2 yrs. Our DS, is a dual major, govt politics and mil history, plus an AFROTC scholarship, which requires even more time (pt at 7 am is not fun for kids, plus a 3 hour lab for a total of 4 credits) This yr he will be carrying 20 credits between both of them.

Think of it this way, in their sr yr when they are either interviewing for jobs or grad school, one kid will have scholars, the other won’t. Let’s say they both have near or equivalent gpas, which one will they pick for the job or grad program? The scholar or the gen. degree. I think we all know the answer, because in their mind, the scholar was already deemed “higher” by UMD and they had presumably a harder load because of the program, thus, the scholar will most likely win out. Now let’s remember the scholar who carries a 3.0 will not win out to the non-scholar with a 3.6, unless they have something else to offset it.

DS felt his Scholars program was merely window dressing with no real value but it is nice to see it on his transcript now that he has completed the program.

I, as well as several of my friends, all dropped scholars. We felt that it just wouldn’t carry the same clout as honors, since honors it pretty universally recognized whereas scholars is UMD-specific. It just wasn’t worth taking the 1 credit colloquium, and didn’t contribute to our learning experience. There’s a little bit of networking, a little bit of experience you could derive from it, but it doesn’t make it worth it for some scholars programs. I don’t know what program you’re in, but I was in BSE. Depends on that, as some programs are better than others.
